CROP DAMAGE DUE TO CYCLONES

म(cid:287)ं ी be pleased to state:
(a) the total extent of crop area damaged in Tamil Nadu due to heavy rains, floods and
cyclones during the last five years, year and district-wise, including Thiruvallur district;
(b) the total financial loss to agriculture assessed by the Government of Tamil Nadu
during each of these years and the quantum of financial assistance sought from the
Union Government;
(c) the total amount of assistance approved and released by the Union Government
to Tamil Nadu under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF), State Disaster
Response Fund (SDRF), or any other head during the same period, year-wise; and
(d) the total number of farmers in Tamil Nadu and specifically in Thiruvallur district who
received compensation under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) during
the last five years, along with details of claims settled, claims pending and average
time taken for settlement?

(a): The primary responsibility for disaster including assessment management
damages on the ground rests with the State Governments concerned. The Central
Government provides requisite logistics and financial support to the efforts of the State
Governments. The State Governments provide financial relief to the affected people
in the event of 12 notified natural disasters which includes cyclone and flood, from the
State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), already placed at its disposal, in accordance
with approved items and norms of Government of India (GOI). However, in the event
of disaster of a severe nature, additional financial assistance is extended from the
National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF), as per laid down procedure, which includes
an assessment based on the visit of an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) and
memorandum for assistance under NDRF submitted by the State/ UT Government.
The financial assistance provided under SDRF and NDRF is by way of relief and not
for compensation.As per information received from MHA, the Ministry does not centrally maintain data
regarding cropped area losses due to any natural calamities. However, the details of
cropped area loss in wake of hydrometeorological disasters during the year 2020-21
to 2024-25 are given below:
