Parliament Question: District Agro-Meteorological (Agro-Met) Units

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF EARTH SCIENCES LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 6208 TO BE ANSWERED ON WEDNESDAY, 1ST APRIL, 2026 DISTRICT AGRO-METEOROLOGICAL (AGRO-MET) UNITS 6208. SHRI APPALANAIDU KALISETTI: DR. BYREDDY SHABARI: Will the Minister of EARTH SCIENCES be pleased to state: (a) whether it is true that several District Agro-Meteorological Units are presently non operational or have been closed and if so, the details thereof, State and district-wise including Andhra Pradesh along with the reasons therefor; (b) the details of the number of units currently active, State-wise and district-wise particularly for Andhra Pradesh along with estimated number of farmers/beneficiaries served by such units; (c) whether the Government proposes to revive or re-establish such District Agro Meteorological Units and if so, the details thereof including timelines and the number of units proposed, State and district-wise particularly in Andhra Pradesh; (d) the details of the funds allocated, sanctioned and released for establishing or re- establishing such units during the last five years, year-wise and State-wise; and (e) whether specific districts have been identified for prioritised revival and if so, the details thereof along with the target dates and implementation plans particularly in Andhra Pradesh? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) FOR MINISTRY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AND EARTH SCIENCES (DR. JITENDRA SINGH) (a)-(c) Weather-based agro-advisory services in the country were being provided by 199 District Agro-Meteorological Units (DAMUs) under Gramin Krishi Mausam Sewa (GKMS). The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is continuing the Agro- Meteorological services to the farmers at the district level through a network of 130 Agrometeorological Field Units (AMFUs), established in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) across the country, including 9 units in Andhra Pradesh. The relevant information and advisories are disseminated through digital platforms such as Panchayat Mausam Sewa, Mausam App, Meghdoot App, and other IT-based dissemination systems in the larger interest of farmers across the country. The Ministry is in continuous endeavour of augmenting the observational network, including Agro- Automatic Weather Stations and R&D infrastructure, towards achieving better accuracy in weather forecasting and improved meteorological services. (d) The year-wise details of the funds released in the last five years are provided in Annexure-1.(e) The Agro-Meteorological Services at the district level are provided by IMD in association with the agencies such as the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, through 9 AMFUs, established in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendras in the State of Andhra Pradesh, without the re-establishment of DAMUs.Annexure-1 Year-wise details of the funds released in the last five years are as follows: S.
