Parliament Question: Establishment of an Indian Institute of Management in Telangana

Dr. Mallu Ravi Will the Minister of EDUCATION be pleased to state: (a) whether the Government has adopted any policy or criteria for equitable establishment of Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) across the States and Union Territories, if so, the details thereof; (b) whether Telangana, despite being in existence for over a decade, remains one of the major States without an IIM and if so, the reasons therefor; (c) whether the Government has received any proposal from the Government of Telangana for establishment of an IIM in the State, including an offer of about 200 acres of land free of cost and if so, the present status thereof; (d) whether the Government proposes to establish an IIM in Telangana to ensure balanced regional access to premier management education; and (e) if so, the time-frame envisaged for its establishment and if not, the reasons therefor ANSWER MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION (DR. SUKANTA MAJUMDAR) (a) & (b): The Government of India periodically establishes new institutions of national importance, including Indian Institutes of Management (IIM), across India, after taking into account regional balance and resource availability. Presently, there are 22 IIMs functioning in 21 States. The states of Telangana, Goa, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim do not have an IIM. (c) to (e): The Government has received a request for sanction of an IIM in Hyderabad. As per the All-India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2023–24, Telangana hosts 2,070 higher education institutions (HEIs), of these, 604 institutions offer management courses, including 20 universities, 570 colleges, and 14 standalone institutes. Telangana hosts several premier central government higher educational institutions, including the University of Hyderabad, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad, National Institute of Technology (NIT) Warangal, English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Hyderabad, and Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), Hyderabad. Further, the Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University at Mulugu was established in 2023. *****
