EXPORT AND PRODUCTION OF QUARTZ

Will the Minister of MINES be pleased to state:
(a) the details of the total quantity of quartz produced in the country during the last five
years, year and State-wise;
(b) the details of the total quantity of quartz exported from the country during the last
five years, year and country-wise;
(c) whether the domestic demand for quartz is being met adequately after accounting
for the quantity exported;
(d) if so, the details thereof along with the factors ensuring sufficient supply and if not,
the reasons for the shortfall;
(e) whether the Government is taking necessary steps to ensure availability of quartz
for domestic industries, if so, the details thereof;
(f) whether the Government has formulated any policy or strategy to boost quartz
exports to International markets; and
(g) if so, the details of such a policy, including target countries, incentives, marketing
efforts or trade agreements in place?

(a): In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (e) of section 3 of the Mines and
Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, Quartz was declared a minor
mineral on 10.02.2015, and has recently been reclassified as a major mineral on
20.02.2025. Being under the domain of States from 10.02.2015 to 20.02.2025, State-
wise production data has not been centrally maintained. However, States like
Rajasthan, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are important Quartz producers. As per
available information, quantity of Quartz produced during the last five years in these
three States is given below:(Production quantity in lakh ton)

(b) to (e): Details of total quantity of quartz exported from India during last 5 years,
year- and country-wise, are at Annexure. Annual export is 916 kilo ton (kt) as against
a mere 4 kt of annual import, implying sufficient availability for domestic industries.
Moreover, import of Quartz into the country is under ‘free’ category, ensuring
conditions for ease of domestic supply.
(f) & (g): Quartz benefits from various government policies and schemes aimed at
export promotion. New Foreign Trade Policy came into effect from 01.04.2023.
Districts as Export Hubs initiative, which is aimed at addressing bottlenecks for
exporting products with export potential, has identified Quartz, among other items. In
addition, the Export Promotion Mission announced in the Union Budget 2025-26 is
aimed at facilitating easy access to export credit, cross-border factoring support, and
support to MSMEs to tackle non-tariff measures in overseas markets.
