Factual Mistakes in Textbooks
1245. Shri Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka:
Will the Minister of EDUCATION be pleased to state:
(a) whether the Government is aware of reports regarding errors, factual inaccuracies and other
mistakes in textbooks prescribed and distributed to students of Government schools in Odisha
and if so, the details thereof, including the classes, subjects and textbooks affected;
(b) whether the Government has sought any report or clarification from the Government of Odisha
regarding such errors and their impact on students and if so, the details thereof;
(c) whether the Government has examined if prescribed procedures for academic review, expert
verification, proofreading and quality checks were followed before printing and distribution of
such textbooks and if so, the findings thereof; and
(d) the steps taken/proposed to be taken by the Government in coordination with the State
Government to rectify or replace erroneous textbooks, fix responsibility for lapses and strengthen
review and quality-control mechanisms to ensure that students receive accurate and error-free
learning materials?

(a) to (d): Education is in the Concurrent List of the Constitution and majority of the schools
come under the purview of the respective State and UT Government. The textbook development and
distribution to students, comes under the domain of State/ UT Government. As informed by the State
Government of Odisha, National Education Policy, 2020 has been implemented by the Govt. of
Odisha from the year 2025-26. Accordingly, 55 textbooks for Classes I to VIII were developed in
alignment with NCERT Textbooks and distributed among the students for the academic session 2026-
27. Based on the feedback received from the public and the inhouse review of text books by the
SCERT, a corrigendum on the errors found in different textbooks from Classes I to VIII was issued
to all the DEOs, for use during the class room transaction.
As per information received from State, a three-member Enquiry Committee, headed by the
Development Commissioner-cum-Additional Chief Secretary, was constituted by the State
Government to enquire into the matter of errors detected in the textbooks developed, printed and
distributed to students of Class I to Class VIII. Based on the report of the Committee, the State
Government has taken corrective actions. Further the State Government has initiated necessary steps
for providing error free text books to the students.
