GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF STEEL LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 245 FOR ANSWER ON 21.07.2026 FIRE ACCIDENT AT VISAKH APATNAM STEEL PLANT 245. DR. GANAPATHY RAJKUMAR P: Will the Minister of STEEL be pleased to state: (a) the details and the total number of workers died and injured during the recent fire accident at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP); (b) the details of the compensation paid to the family of those workers died and injured in the fire accident; (c) whether the Union Government has any proposal to offer any permanent job to the eligible family member of those workers died in the accident; and (d) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE (SHRI BHUPATHIRAJU SRINIVASA VARMA) MINISTRY OF STEEL (a)to(d): An accident occurred at Steel Melting Shop (SMS-2) of Steel Plant of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd. (RINL), Vishakhapatnam on 08th June, 2026, resulting in spillage of molten steel. In this accident, ten (10) workers comprising of five (5) Regular Employees and five (5) Contractual Workers lost their lives and four (4) Regular Workers sustained injuries. An ex gratia payment of ₹25 lakh, in addition to the admissible terminal benefits, has been made to the family of each deceased regular and contractual employee. Compensation of ₹10 lakh has been paid to each of the injured employees. In addition, an ex gratia payment of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) has also been sanctioned to the next of kin of each deceased employee, while ₹50,000 has been sanctioned to each injured employee. Further, one (1) eligible dependent family member of each deceased regular as well as contractual employee has been offered compassionate appointment in RINL. *****
