Functioning of AYUSH Colleges

Will the Minister of AYUSH be pleased to state:
(a) the details of the total number of AYUSH colleges functioning in the country, State/UT-
wise and Stream-wise, especially in Tamil Nadu;
(b) whether the Government proposes to establish new AYUSH Institutions or upgrade
existing facilities in Tamil Nadu under any Central scheme; and
(c) if so, the details thereof along with the locations identified, proposed budget, along with
the expected benefits to AYUSH education and healthcare delivery in the State of Tamil
Nadu?

(a) There are total 947 Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, Sowa-Rigpa and Homoeopathy (ASUS&H)
colleges functioning in the country, out of these 39 colleges currently operating in the State of
Tamil Nadu, State/UT-wise and stream-wise detail is annexed as Annexure-I.
(b) & (c) Public Health is a State subject and upgradation of Ayush Educational Institutions and
establishment of new Ayush Colleges in the States comes under the purview of the respective
State/UT Governments, including Tamil Nadu. However, Ministry of Ayush is implementing the
Centrally Sponsored Scheme namely National Ayush Mission (NAM) through States/UTs
including Tamil Nadu, to support their efforts towards the promotion and overall development of
Ayush system of medicine. Under NAM, financial assistance is provided for upgradation of
existing Under Graduate and Post Graduate Government/Government-aided Ayush Educational
Institutions and establishment of new Ayush Colleges in States where Government-sector Ayush
Institutions are inadequate. Based on the proposals received from the Government of Tamil Nadu
through State Annual Action Plans (SAAPs), Ayush Educational Institutions have been upgradedsince 2014, the institution-wise details are attached as Annexure-II. In addition, during 2022–23,
an amount of Rs. 400.00 lakh was approved for the establishment of a new Ayush Educational
Institution at Palani, Tamil Nadu, which has been fully utilized. In SAAP 2024-2025,
Government Homoeopathy Medical College at Madurai has been approved and an amount of
Rs.22.00 Crore has been allotted in SAAP 2025-26. The details of locations and budget
allocations for the upgradation of Undergraduate and Postgraduate Ayush Education Institutions
are given in the Annexure-II. These initiatives are expected to strengthen Ayush education,
enhance institutional infrastructure, and improve availability of qualified Ayush professionals,
thereby contributing to improved Ayush healthcare delivery in the State.
