Parliament Question: Funds for Drinking Water and Sanitation under SCM

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 2164 TO BE ANSWERED ON FEBRUARY 12, 2026 FUNDS FOR DRINKING WATER AND SANITATION UNDER SCM NO. 2164. SHRI SELVAGANAPATHI T.M.: Will the Minister of HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS be pleased to state: (a) whether it is a fact that the Union Government is providing funds to cities across the country for the purpose of drinking water and sanitation under the Smart Cities Mission and if so, the details thereof; (b) the details of the total funds released so far to various cities across the country during the last three financial years; (c) whether it is also true that the State Governments have been demanding more allocation of funds under the said mission; and (d) if so, the details thereof along with the steps taken by the Government in this regard? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS (SHRI TOKHAN SAHU) (a) & (b): The cities under SCM have been developed based on Smart City Proposals (SCPs) received from States/UTs, across various sectors, viz., smart mobility, Water Sanitation Hygiene (WASH), smart governance, smart energy, environment etc., approved by State High Powered Steering Committee (HPSC) chaired by the Chief Secretary of the State. Under the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), the city strengthened solid waste management through the procurement of waste collection vehicles, promotion of source segregation, decentralized waste processing, citizen awareness initiatives and the construction of a sewage treatment plant. Water supply projects focused on ensuring safe and reliable drinking water through treatment facilities, improved distribution networks, and smart metering, while storm water drainage projects addressed urban flooding through drain development, rehabilitation and desilting works. State/UT wise Central Financial Assistance claimed & utilized by 100 Smart Cities since inception of the Mission is at Annexure. (c) & (d): The Smart Cities Mission has already come to end on 31.03.2025 and there is no budgetary provision under the mission post its closure. *****Annexure Annexure referred to in reply for part (b) of Lok Sabha Unstarred Question No. 2164 for answer on 12th February, 2026 regarding Funds for Drinking Water and Sanitation Under SCM.
