Will the Minister of ENVIRONMENT, FOREST AND CLIMATE CHANGE be pleased to
state:
(a) whether it is a fact that incidents of human–animal conflict have increased in Assam since 2021;
(b) the number of human and wild animals deaths and injuries caused due to human–animal conflict in the State since 2021, year-wise and species-wise;
(c) whether Government has assessed changes in forest cover, wildlife habitat size and corridor connectivity in the State since 2021 and if so, the details thereof; and
(d) whether habitat fragmentation, encroachment, linear infrastructure and land-use change have contributed to increased conflict in the State? ANSWER MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT, FOREST AND CLIMATE CHANGE (SHRI KIRTI VARDHAN SINGH)
(a) to (d) Protection and management of wild animals and their habitats, including management of human wildlife conflict is primarily the responsibility of the concerned States/Union Territories.
As per the details provided by the State Government, the details of human deaths and injuries caused due to human-animal conflict in Assam since 2021, is at Annexure-I. The details of wild animal deaths and injuries caused due to human-animal conflict in Assam since 2021 is at Annexure- II.
The State of Assam has increased 1369.25 Sq. Km area forest cover by declaring new National Parks and by addition to existing National Parks/ Wildlife Sanctuaries since 2021. Government of Assam has also identified and delineated nine animal corridors connecting Karbi Anglong Hill and Kaziranga National Park for safe passage of animals between the two landscapes. The State of Assam has also carried out large scale evictions in various Reserve Forests of the State and since 2021, the State has cleared about 14,795 Ha. of land from encroachments.
