Parliament Question: Impact of Bangladesh and China Ties on India

KRISHNA DEVI SHIVSHANKAR PATEL: Will the Minister of EXTERNAL AFFAIRS be pleased to state: (a) whether the Government is aware of the apprehensions that the growing relations between Bangladesh and China may have adverse impact on India, if so, the details thereof; and (b) whether the Ministry is aware that Bangladesh has entrusted the Teesta River Project to China and that the China-Bangladesh-Myanmar Economic Corridor project is also being awarded to China, if so, the steps being taken by the Government to safeguard India's economic and strategic interests in such a situation? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS (SHRI KIRTI VARDHAN SINGH) 1(a & b) The Government constantly monitors all developments in our immediate neighbourhood having a bearing on India’s interests and takes all necessary measures to safeguard it. Given our historic and close cultural ties, India continues to engage with Bangladesh with a view to advancing mutual interests. India’s relationship with Bangladesh is independent of its relationship with third countries. India has noted references to the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project and reports of the proposed China- Myanmar-Bangladesh Economic Corridor. The Government will factor in all related developments while evolving its overall approach to the Teesta issue and trade and economic relations with Bangladesh. ***** 2
