IMPLEMENTATION OF PMKSY IN MAHARASHTRA

be pleased to state:
(a) the details and current status of Micro Irrigation Initiatives under Pradhan Mantri Krishi
Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) in various areas in Maharashtra;
(b) the details of the progress during last five years along with the completion of the above
Irrigation Projects under PMKSY;
(c) the details of coverage area of Micro Irrigation in the districts;
(d) the number of farmers benefited along with the increase in crop yield/irrigation efficiency
from the said projects; and
(e) the details of the challenges faced during the implementation of PMKSY and Micro
Irrigation Initiatives in the State?

(a) to (e): Per Drop More Crop (PDMC) scheme focuses on enhancing water use
efficiency at farm level through Micro Irrigation, namely, Drip and Sprinkler Irrigation
systems.
As per the information received from State of Maharashtra, during last five years and
current financial year, 7.69 lakh hectare has been covered under micro-irrigation in
Maharashtra, benefitting 7.72 lakh farmers. The districtwise details of area covered under
micro-irrigation in State is given in Annexure.
As per Ministry of Jal Shakti, under PMKSY-Accelerated Irrigation Benefit
Programme, 29 major and medium irrigation projects from Maharashtra have been taken up
for funding, out of which 19 are completed. 4.16 lakh hectare irrigation potential has beencreated and 2.71 lakh hectare command area has been developed in Maharashtra under
these projects during 2016-25.
NITI Aayog has undertaken impact evaluation study of the PDMC Scheme covering
12 States including State of Maharashtra. The study revealed that the scheme is relevant in
achieving national priorities such as substantially improving on-farm water use efficiency,
enhancing crop productivity, generating employment opportunities etc. It also reported that
micro irrigation adoption has improved water use efficiency in range of 30% to 70% and
productivity enhancement in the range of 9% to 100%.
Some of the challenges in implementation of PDMC reported by State of
Maharashtra includes high number of small and marginal farmers and capital investments
involved in adoption of system for small and marginal farmers. In this regard, the guidelines
of PDMC scheme entails enhanced benefits for lower holding coverage and higher subsidy
provisions for small and marginal farmers. In addition, State of Maharashtra provides top-up
subsidy taking up assistance to farmers up to 90 % of the micro irrigation cost.Annexure to US-PQLS No. 3956 due for 17.03.2026
