SHRI SASIKANTH SENTHIL: Will the Minister of HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS be pleased to state: (a) the current status of implementation of the Smart Cities Mission (SCM) in Tamil Nadu including the total number of projects sanctioned, completed and pending as on October 2025; (b) the details of the funds allocated, released and utilised under the said Mission for each Smart City in the State; (c) the major sectors in which projects have been undertaken such as urban mobility, water supply, waste management, digital infrastructure and housing and their present stage of completion; and (d) whether the Government has fixed any revised timelines or monitoring mechanism to ensure completion of all pending projects in Tamil Nadu and if so, the details thereof? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS (SHRI TOKHAN SAHU) (a) & (b): Under Smart Cities Mission (SCM), 11 cities, viz. Chennai, Coimbatore, Erode, Madurai, Salem, Thanjavur, Thoothukudi, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Tiruppur and Vellore have been selected in the State of Tamil Nadu. As reported by the State on 01.12.2025, out of a total 729 projects amounting to ₹17,952 crore, 726 projects (99.60% of total projects) amounting to ₹17,924 crore have been completed and the remaining 3 projects amounting to ₹28 crore are ongoing. City wise details of the Central Financial Assistance claimed, fund utilized and status of projects in the State of Tamil Nadu is at Annexure-I. …2/--2- (c) The objective of SCM was not the development of entire city but to follow an area-based development approach through retrofitting, redevelopment, greenfield development and a Pan-city initiative in which smart solutions are applied covering larger parts of the city, so as to create a replicable model. The cities under SCM are being developed based on Smart City Proposals (SCPs) received from States/UTs, across various sectors, viz., smart mobility, Water, Sanitation, Hygiene (WASH), smart governance, smart energy, environment etc., approved by High Powered Steering Committee (HPSC) chaired by the Chief Secretary. The city-wise details of projects undertaken in various sectors in the state of Tamil Nadu is at Annexure-II. (d) Post the financial closure of SCM on 31st March, 2025, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has issued Advisory No 27 dated 10th June, 2025 to all States/ UTs. The ongoing projects are in different stages of implementation.
