INDIGENOUS BREEDS AND ANIMAL HUSBANDRY PERFORMANCE

Will the Minister of FISHERIES, ANIMAL HUSBANDRY AND DAIRYING

be pleased to state:
(a) the current date on breed-wise population, productivity indicators and geographic spread
of recognised indigenous cattle, buffalo, goat, sheep, pig, poultry and duck breeds in Odisha,
including Binjharpuri, Khariar, Chilika buffalo, Black Bengal and Ganjam goat, Bolangir sheep,
Hansli poultry and indigenous duck breeds, as per the latest available data;
(b) the share of indigenous and crossbreed livestock in Odisha’s milk, meat and egg output
during the last five years, including average daily yields and the comparative contribution of
backyard and commercial systems;
(c) the status of fodder availability in Odisha, including estimated deficits of green and dry
fodder, coverage under fodder development programmes and adoption of azolla, perennial fodder
and crop-residue enrichment during the said period, district-wise; and
(d) the number of livestock-owning households in Odisha benefiting from breeding, AI, animal
health, vaccination and doorstep veterinary services and the outcome indicators tracked in terms
of productivity and income enhancement?

(SHRI RAJIV RANJAN SINGH ALIAS LALAN SINGH)
(a) A table containing latest available population of Indigenous species of cattle, buffalo, goat,
sheep, pig, poultry and duck including Binjharpuri, Khariar, Chilika buffalo, Black Bengal and
Ganjam goat, Bolangir sheep, Hansli poultry and indigenous duck in entire country viz-a-viz
Odisha State and their geographical spread is placed at Annexure-I.
(b) A table containing the estimated production of milk (separately for indigenous and
crossbreed), egg (separately for commercial & backyard) and meat in Odisha State is placed at
Annexure II.(c) As per information made available by Odisha State the status of district-wise fodder
availability in Odisha including estimated deficit of green and dry fodder is placed at Annexure
III. Coverage and fodder production of azolla, perennial fodder and seasonal fodder (including
crop-residue) are placed at Annexure IV, Annexure V and Annexure VI, respectively.
(d) The Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD), GoI is continuously
supporting all the livestock farmers including the farmers of Odisha State to increase livestock
productivity and augmenting livestock health care through the implementation of Livestock Health
& Disease Control Programme (LHDCP) which is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS). The
activities supported in LHDCP are vaccination against Foot & Mouth Disease (FMD), Brucellosis,
Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) and Classical Swine Fever (CSF) under 100% central assistance.
Assistance to States for Control of Animal Disease (ASCAD) for control of state prioritized animal
diseases including 100% financial assistance to States/UTs for awareness, training and publicity
on good Animal husbandry practices and Veterinary care. Similarly, Nationwide Artificial
Insemination Programme (NAIP) under Rashtriya Gokul Mission, a Central Sector Scheme, with
an aim to increase milk production and improve livestock genetics by providing free doorstep
artificial insemination (AI) services to the farmers where AI coverage is below 50%. A table
showing number of livestock farmers benefited from these services in Odisha State during last
four years and current year is placed at Annexure VII. As a result, the milk production of Odisha
State has increased from 2402.06 thousand tonnes in 2021-22 to 2700.96 thousand tonnes in 2024-
25, a 12.44% increase. Similarly, the average yield rate of milk production from Indigenous &
Non-Descript cattle has been increased from 1.50 kg/per day to 1.66 kg/day during the same
period. For Exotic and Crossbred cattle this number has increased from 6.76 kg per day to 7.37
kg/per day.
