Parliament Question: Initiatives in the field of personalised Ayush medicine

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF AYUSH RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 321 TO BE ANSWERED ON 03rd FEBRUARY, 2026 “Initiatives in the field of personalised Ayush medicine” 321. Smt. Sumitra Balmik: Will the Minister of Ayush be pleased to state: (a) Government’s initiatives in the field of “Ayur-Genomics” (integration of Ayurveda with Genomics) to provide personalized precision medicine; (b) the growth in the export of value-added herbal products following the “Heal in India” campaign and the creation of the Ayush Visa category; and (c) the steps taken to digitize ancient medical manuscripts under the Ayush Grid Project to prevent bio-piracy and preserve Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS)? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE (IC) OF THE MINISTRY OF AYUSH (SHRI PRATAPRAO JADHAV) (a) With the objective of promoting personalized precision medicine, the Ministry of Ayush, under the Central Sector Scheme ‘Centre of Excellence’ of the Ayurswasthya Yojana, sanctioned a project titled ‘Centre of Excellence for Applied Development of Ayurveda Prakriti and Genomics’ to the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) – Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology in the year 2018. An amount of ₹9,04,23,446/- (Rupees Nine Crore Four Lakh Twenty-Three Thousand Four Hundred Forty-Six) was released for implementation of the project. The project aimed at mapping and validating multi-omics signatures in relation to Prakriti, Vikriti, and Dosha for population stratification. Government of India, Ministry of Ayush has set up Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) an autonomous organization for undertaking, coordinating, formulating, developing, and promoting research on scientific lines in Ayurvedic sciences. To provide a scientific basis for personalized medicine, Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) focuses on transforming fundamental concepts into a measurable, scientific framework for personalized medicine. The initiatives taken by CCRAS are:- 1 Council has developed Standardized Prakriti Assessment Scale and AYUR Prakriti Web Portal 2 Further, to study various signatures of specific Prakriti groups in relation to Multi omics correlates of Contemporary sciences, the following projects have been undertaken by Council: i. Systems Biology approach to delineate molecular signatures of Prakriti in healthy humans Page 1 of 2ii. Elucidating Mitochondrial function by profiling of mito-nuclear gene variations towards understanding the molecular basis of Ayurvedic Prakriti: A determinant of health and longevity iii. Understanding prakriti and its inheritance pattern in health and predominant disease predisposition from a regional perspective - a genetic and epigenetic study (b) As per the report of the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS), an autonomous Policy Research Institute, on “Ayush Sector in India: Prospects and Challenges”, the Ayush Manufacturing Sector has witnessed an exponential growth of 6 times in 7 years from US$2.85 Billion in 2014 to US$18.1 Billion in 2020. The report also mentioned that with the turnover of US$ 18.1 billion (in 2020), the market size of Indian Ayush industry as a whole has grown by 17 per cent during 2014-2020. The report is available on RIS website https://www.ris.org.in. Further, as per the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS) database, the exports of Ayush and herbal products increased by approximately 6% over in the year 2024-25. In addition, under the Ayush Visa category, 16 NABH-accredited Institutes of the CCRAS have applied for registration as service providers. (c) National Institute of Indian Medical Heritage, Hyderabad a unit under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences works with the mandate of Literary research and documentation & revival and retrieval of texts from ancient manuscripts and rare books. The National Institute of Indian Medical Heritage, Hyderabad maintains a Medico-Historical Library which has a significant collection of Manuscripts, rare books and books about Ayurveda, Siddha, Yoga, Unani, Homoeopathy etc. Medical Systems. The Institute also maintains a digital repository of about 5000 medical manuscripts and 1335 rare books collected from different Manuscript repositories, State museums, Academic institutions, Libraries and Personal collections across South India (Telangana and Andhra Pradesh), Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. **** Page 2 of 2
