“Modern Scientific trial of Ayurvedic medicines”

Will the Minister of Ayush be pleased to state:
(a) the details of the research institutions engaged in scientific studies to assess the quality and
efficacy of Ayurvedic medicines in the country;
(b) whether modern scientific testing of Ayurvedic medicines is being conducted at a limited
scale, if so, the steps being taken to expand such testing; and
(c) whether Government has entered into any agreements with foreign universities or research
institutions for the study of Ayurvedic medicine systems, if so, the details thereof?

(SHRI PRATAPRAO JADHAV)
(a) Government of India, Ministry of Ayush has set up Central Council for Research in
Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), an autonomous organisation for undertaking, coordinating,
formulating, developing and promoting research on scientific lines in Ayurvedic Sciences. The
research activities are carried out through its 30 Centres/Units located all over India and
through collaborative studies with various Universities, Hospitals and Institutes. The list of the
CCRAS Institute/Centres is annexed at Annexure -I.
Further, the other National Institutes (National Institute of Ayurveda, Jaipur, Institute of
Teaching and Research in Ayurveda, Jamnagar, North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda &
Homoeopathy, Shillong and All India Institute of Ayurveda) are also engaged in scientific
studies to assess the quality and efficacy of Ayurvedic medicines in the country.
(b) Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) have been generating
scientific evidence through clinical research, through intramural and collaborative modes with
academic, medical and research institutions across India. These efforts are aimed at validating
both safety and efficacy of Ayurvedic interventions using contemporary clinical research
methodologies. All research activities are conducted in accordance with applicable national
guidelines, including the ICMR National Ethical Guidelines for Biomedical and Health
Research involving Human Participants and the Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Guidelines for
Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani (ASU-GCP), along with other relevant regulatory and ethical
requirements.
Page 1 of 11All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi has created a sophisticated research
ecosystem to promote evidence-based research in Ayurveda.
National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA), Jaipur is expanding research labs and clinical studies
to strengthen evidence-based Ayurveda through Drug Discovery & Development Unit
(DDDU), Advanced Human Physiology Lab (AHPL) and Central Laboratory.
Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA), established as an Institution of
National Importance under Ministry of Ayush, is also conducting all the clinical study with
using all the modern tools and parameter. ITRA has well equipped NABL accredited clinical
laboratories (Haematological, biochemical and microbiological lab), fully equipped Animal
house for Pharmacological studies and GMP-certified in-house Pharmacy.
(c) The details of the Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) / Agreements entered into with
different countries and foreign Universities/Institutions/Organisations for the study of
Ayurvedic medicine systems by CCRAS, the NIA, AIIA, and ITRA are placed at Annexure-
II, Annexure-III, Annexure-IV, and Annexure-V, respectively.
