MODERNISATION AND CAPACITY EXPANSION OF BHILAI STEEL PLANT
3836. SMT. ROOPKUMARI CHOUDHARY:
Will the Minister of STEEL be pleased to state:
(a) whether the Government proposes to modernise and expand the production
capacity of the Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) under the National Steel Policy;
(b) if so, the details thereof, including the estimated investment, implementation
timeline and expected increase in production capacity;
(c) the steps taken to enhance the production of value-added steel and improve
operational efficiency at BSP; and
(d) the impact of the proposed expansion on employment generation and industrial
development in Chhattisgarh?

(a)to(d): Steel is a deregulated sector. Decisions regarding modernization and
expansion of production capacity are taken by the concerned steel company based on
techno-commercial considerations, commercial viability, market demand, and the
availability of resources.
Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has approved the expansion of the Bhilai
Steel Plant (BSP) from 6.8 MTPA to 10.2 MTPA crude steel capacity.
To enhance the production of value-added steel and improve operational
efficiency, Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) has undertaken various steps which includes
technology upgradation, modernization of production facilities, digitalization, process
optimization, energy efficiency measures and increased focus on the production of
value-added steel for strategic sectors.
