MODERNISATION OF SALEM STEEL PLANT

Will the Minister of STEEL be pleased to state :
(a) whether the Government and the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is planning
capacity augmentation and modernisation of Salem Steel Plant;
(b) if so, the details thereof including the proposed investments; and
(c) the details of the initiatives being taken to promote exports of Stainless Steel?

T. R. BAALU, MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT REGARDING “MODERNISATION OF
SALEM STEEL PLANT”
(a)to(c): Salem Steel Plant (SSP), a unit of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has
a steel melting capacity of 1.8 lakh tonnes and a rolling capacity of 3.6 lakh tonnes per
annum. The existing capacity is underutilised in SSP. SAIL has undertaken several
measures aimed at improving operational efficiency and long-term sustainability which
includes improving capacity utilization, enhancing operational efficiency, optimizing raw
material and power consumption, and rationalizing the product mix with emphasis on
value-added stainless-steel products. SAIL is streamlining its marketing strategy to
promote the domestic and international sales of stainless steel.
