GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 4311 TO BE ANSWERED ON: 18.03.2026 PHYSICAL AND FINANCIAL PROGRESS UNDER INDIAAI MISSION 4311. MS SAYANI GHOSH: Will the Minister of ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY be pleased to state: (a) the total funds allocated to the India AI Mission, since its launch, year-wise and the actual expenditure incurred during the last two financial years; (b) the physical and financial progress achieved so far under major components of the Mission including Artificial Intelligence (AI) compute infrastructure, datasets, startups support, skilling and public sector AI use-cases; (c) the number of AI startups, institutions, researchers and Government departments that have benefited from the Mission till date, component-wise; (d) whether any targets have been delayed or revised and if so, the reasons therefor; and (e) the roadmap and timelines for achieving the Mission’s stated goals during the next three years? ANSWER MINISTER OF STATE FOR ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (SHRI JITIN PRASADA) (a) to (e): India’s AI strategy is based on the Hon’ble Prime Minister's vision to democratize the use of technology. It aims to address India centric challenges, create economic and employment opportunities for all Indians. IndiaAI Mission: In March 2024, Government of India launched IndiaAI mission with outlay of Rs 10,372 Cr for development of the overall AI ecosystem in the country. Within 24 months, India AI Mission has set up a foundation for development of AI ecosystem in the country: ● More than 38 thousand GPUs for common compute facility have been onboarded, which are being provided to Indian start-ups and academia at an affordable rate. ● In the initial phase twelve teams have been shortlisted for development of indigenous foundational models or Large Language Models. Of these, Sarvam AI, BharatGen, Gnani, and Socket launched their models at IndiaAI impact summit in February, 2026. ● Thirty applications have been approved for developing India specific AI applications in the critical sectors such as health, climate change, agriculture, etc. ● More than eight thousand undergraduate students, five thousand post graduate students and five hundred PhD students are supported for talent development.● 27 India Data and AI labs have been established and 543 more have been identified. ● 10,000+ datasets, 285 AI models and 28 development toolkits specific to India are available on the platform. ● 13 projects have been selected in Safe & Trusted Pillar, addressing issues like machine unlearning, AI algorithm auditing tools, privacy-preserving machine learning, explainability, and evaluating gender bias in Agriculture LLMs etc. ● The IndiaAI Startups Global program in collaboration with Station F (Paris) and HEC Paris, supported 10 Indian AI startups in accessing global innovation ecosystems and expanding into international markets ● India hosted the India-AI Impact Summit 2026 from 16–21 February 2026 at New Delhi. For the first time, the global AI summit series took place in the Global South. The Summit concluded as a historic global convergence, establishing India as a global hub for artificial intelligence innovation, governance, partnership, and inclusive growth. The implementation of ‘IndiaAI Mission’ is with a total outlay of Rs. 10,371.92 Cr for a period of 5 years.
