ANSWER
THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR AGRICULTURE AND FARMERS WELFARE
कृ(cid:874)ष एवं (cid:873)कसान क(cid:227)याण रा(cid:207)य मं(cid:287)ी (SHRI RAMNATH THAKUR)
(a): The details of area under cultivation, production and productivity (yield per
hectare) of Arecanut during each of the last five years i.e. from 2021-22 to 2025-26
(Second Advance Estimates) in the country, State/UT- wise, are given
at Annexure-I.
(b): During the last five years, Karnataka accounted for 71.56% of the country's
total area and 75.47% of the country’s total production under Arecanut.(c): The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (DA&FW) releases area
and production estimates of horticulture crops, including Arecanut, at the State/UT
level and All-India level, sourced from the Directorate of Arecanut and Spices
Development (DASD). The district-level data of area, production and productivity of
Arecanut for each of the last five years in Karnataka is given at Annexure-II.
(d): Under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), a
centrally sponsored scheme, there is no specific provision for providing assistance
for Arecanut development through area expansion to the States/UTs. However,
financial assistance is provided to the Directorate of Arecanut and Spices
Development (DASD) under MIDH, for implementing, coordinating and monitoring
the activities on development of Arecanut, Spices and Aromatic plants. The details
of funds allocated and released to DASD under MIDH during the last five years is as
under:
(Rs. in crore)
Year Allocation Released

2025-26 14.00 14.00
(e): The overall development of Arecanut at the National level is coordinated by
the Directorate of Arecanut and Spices Development (DASD), Calicut. DASD has
implemented the following technical programmes and technology-dissemination
schemes:
Arecanut based Multispecies Cropping Systems: To enhance farmer’s
income from the existing unit area, the Directorate promotes and
popularizes multispecies cropping systems in existing Arecanut gardens.
Front Line Demonstrations (FLDs) are held in the fields of progressive
farmers, along with the organization of awareness and training
programmes to disseminate this technology and adoption of this practice.
Management of Fruitrot/ Mahali disease through effective fungicides:
Establishes FLDs to demonstrate the effect of the new fungicide
Mandipropamid in management of fruit rot disease in Arecanut in selected
areas of Kerala and Karnataka.
Management of Arecanut rootgrub infestation through the use of
Entomopathogenic Nematode (EPN): Establishes FLDs to popularize
the use of EPN in management of root grubs in Arecanut.
Promotion of Hybrid Dwarf varieties: Demonstrated dwarf hybrid
varieties of Arecanut in selected farmers’ fields to encourage easier
harvesting operations and optimize plant density. Yellow Leaf Disease (YLD) management through plastic mulch: FLDs
are established in farmers’ field to demonstrate the effect of plastic
mulching in YLD management in Arecanut.
Initiative for disease prediction: A Temperature and Relative Humidity
Controller Unit has been given to the Indian Council of Agricultural
Research (ICAR)- Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) for
studying the relationship between weather and Leaf Spot Disease (LSD)
of Arecanut to help in disease prediction.
Community-Based Leaf Spot Disease (LSD) management: DASD has
established large-scale demonstration on community-based management
of LSD in Arecanut across 10 LSD affected Arecanut growing taluks in
Karnataka from 2025-26 in the selected farmers’ fields of the affected
area. This programme covers 50 hectare, with 5 hectare in each taluk,
aiming to popularize the recommended scientific management measures
for control of LSD. An amount of Rs. 6.32 crores has been sanctioned for
this programme for a period of three years.
Evidence based Health Research: To address the knowledge gap and
provide conclusive evidence on the health effects of Arecanut, DASD, in
collaboration with ICAR-CPCRI, is implementing a project titled "Evidence-
Based Research on Arecanut and Human Health”. This project brings
together around 12 National and State-level agencies dealing with medical
research, including All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New
Delhi; Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad; and
others to conduct detailed research on the effects of Arecanut on human
health. An advisory Committee has been setup for monitoring this
research. The project has been started in 2025-26 and an amount of Rs
9.99 crores has been sanctioned for a period of three years.
Value Chain Study on Arecanut: The DASD in association with ICAR-
CPCRI, is conducting a pilot study on value chain of Arecanut to
understand the existing value chains in the sector and to analyse the
consumption patterns and distribution channels of Arecanut and its
products.Annexure-I
