SHRI B Y RAGHAVENDRA: Will the Minister of AGRICULTURE AND FARMERS WELFARE कृ(cid:874)ष एवं (cid:873)कसान क(cid:227)याण मं(cid:287)ी be pleased to state: (a) the details of area under cultivation, production and productivity (yield per hectare) of Arecanut during each of the last five years in the country, State/UT-wise; (b) the share of Karnataka in the total area under cultivation and production of Arecanut in the country during the above period; (c) whether the data on area, production and productivity of Arecanut in Karnataka is maintained by the Government and if so, the details thereof for each of the last five years, district-wise; (d) the details of financial assistance provided by the Union Government for Arecanut development during the above period in the country, State/UT-wise; and (e) the details of the programmes implemented by the Directorate of Arecanut and Spices Development, Calicut? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR AGRICULTURE AND FARMERS WELFARE कृ(cid:874)ष एवं (cid:873)कसान क(cid:227)याण रा(cid:207)य मं(cid:287)ी (SHRI RAMNATH THAKUR) (a): The details of area under cultivation, production and productivity (yield per hectare) of Arecanut during each of the last five years i.e. from 2021-22 to 2025-26 (Second Advance Estimates) in the country, State/UT- wise, are given at Annexure-I. (b): During the last five years, Karnataka accounted for 71.56% of the country's total area and 75.47% of the country’s total production under Arecanut.(c): The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (DA&FW) releases area and production estimates of horticulture crops, including Arecanut, at the State/UT level and All-India level, sourced from the Directorate of Arecanut and Spices Development (DASD). The district-level data of area, production and productivity of Arecanut for each of the last five years in Karnataka is given at Annexure-II. (d): Under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), a centrally sponsored scheme, there is no specific provision for providing assistance for Arecanut development through area expansion to the States/UTs. However, financial assistance is provided to the Directorate of Arecanut and Spices Development (DASD) under MIDH, for implementing, coordinating and monitoring the activities on development of Arecanut, Spices and Aromatic plants. The details of funds allocated and released to DASD under MIDH during the last five years is as under: (Rs. in crore) Year Allocation Released 2021-22 12.00 12.00 2022-23 14.00 14.00 2023-24 16.88 16.88 2024-25 24.00 20.92 2025-26 14.00 14.00 (e): The overall development of Arecanut at the National level is coordinated by the Directorate of Arecanut and Spices Development (DASD), Calicut. DASD has implemented the following technical programmes and technology-dissemination schemes:  Arecanut based Multispecies Cropping Systems: To enhance farmer’s income from the existing unit area, the Directorate promotes and popularizes multispecies cropping systems in existing Arecanut gardens. Front Line Demonstrations (FLDs) are held in the fields of progressive farmers, along with the organization of awareness and training programmes to disseminate this technology and adoption of this practice.  Management of Fruitrot/ Mahali disease through effective fungicides: Establishes FLDs to demonstrate the effect of the new fungicide Mandipropamid in management of fruit rot disease in Arecanut in selected areas of Kerala and Karnataka.  Management of Arecanut rootgrub infestation through the use of Entomopathogenic Nematode (EPN): Establishes FLDs to popularize the use of EPN in management of root grubs in Arecanut.  Promotion of Hybrid Dwarf varieties: Demonstrated dwarf hybrid varieties of Arecanut in selected farmers’ fields to encourage easier harvesting operations and optimize plant density. Yellow Leaf Disease (YLD) management through plastic mulch: FLDs are established in farmers’ field to demonstrate the effect of plastic mulching in YLD management in Arecanut.  Initiative for disease prediction: A Temperature and Relative Humidity Controller Unit has been given to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)- Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) for studying the relationship between weather and Leaf Spot Disease (LSD) of Arecanut to help in disease prediction.  Community-Based Leaf Spot Disease (LSD) management: DASD has established large-scale demonstration on community-based management of LSD in Arecanut across 10 LSD affected Arecanut growing taluks in Karnataka from 2025-26 in the selected farmers’ fields of the affected area. This programme covers 50 hectare, with 5 hectare in each taluk, aiming to popularize the recommended scientific management measures for control of LSD. An amount of Rs. 6.32 crores has been sanctioned for this programme for a period of three years.  Evidence based Health Research: To address the knowledge gap and provide conclusive evidence on the health effects of Arecanut, DASD, in collaboration with ICAR-CPCRI, is implementing a project titled "Evidence- Based Research on Arecanut and Human Health”. This project brings together around 12 National and State-level agencies dealing with medical research, including All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi; Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad; and others to conduct detailed research on the effects of Arecanut on human health. An advisory Committee has been setup for monitoring this research.
