PROMOTION OF AGRO-TEXTILE FOR AGRICULTURE DEVELOPMENT

Will the Minister of TEXTILES be pleased to state:
(a) whether it is a fact that Government has launched a Smart Agro-Textile Centre for the training and benefit
of farmers with a view to promote the use of agro-textiles for agricultural development;
(b) if so, the details thereof, including the list of products covered under the initiative, the cost involved in
establishing such centre and the total number of such centres set up so far;
(c) the total number of farmers trained till date under this initiative; and
(d) the strategy adopted by the Ministry to extend the benefits of the programme to farmers across the
country?

(a) to (c): Under the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM), one Climate-Smart Agro-Textile
Demonstration Centre at Navsari, Gujarat has been approved at a cost of Rs. 3.75 crore in December, 2024
to promote innovative and sustainable agro-textile applications for the agriculture sector through live
demonstrations, training for farmers, and awareness programmes to enhance productivity, reduce costs,
improve climate resilience, and encourage sustainable practices. At the Centre, multiple agro-textile products
are being demonstrated, including shade nets, vertical farming under shade nets, photo selective shade nets,
shade net nurseries, jute and woven ground covers, crop covers, vermi-beds under shade nets, pond liners,
fencing nets, and crop support nets/trellising ropes. This Demo Centre is being operated by the Synthetic &
Art Silk Mills’ Research Association (SASMIRA). A total of 815 farmers have been trained in the Climate-
Smart Agro-Textile Demonstration Centre at Navsari, Gujarat.
In addition, another Climate-Smart Agro-Textile Demonstration Centre at Pusa, Bihar has been
approved at a cost of Rs. 4.22 crore.
(d): NTTM is a PAN-India initiative to promote technical textiles in the country including Agro-textiles.
The Mission has strategic focus on agro-textiles, recognizing its vital role in enhancing agricultural
sustainability and productivity. The interventions under NTTM focus on Research, Development &
Innovation, Market Development, Export Promotion and Education & Skilling.
