Parliament Question: Promotion of LNG Vehicles

MS KANGNA RANAUT: पे(cid:7069)ोिलयम और (cid:7079)ाकृितक गसै मं(cid:7074)ी Will the Minister of PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS be pleased to state: (a) the details of expenditure incurred by the Government during the last five financial years on schemes, incentives and initiatives aimed at promoting the use of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as an automotive fuel, including support for infrastructure and vehicle adoption; (b) the schemes and policy initiatives currently under implementation for encouraging the use of LNG in the transport sector particularly for long-haul and heavy commercial vehicles; (c) the progress achieved so far under these initiatives including the number of LNG fuelling stations established, LNG vehicles deployed and the impact on fuel diversification and emission reduction; and (d) the Government’s roadmap and future plans for further promotion of LNG vehicles in the country including proposed targets, policy support and integration with the broader clean mobility strategy? ANSWER पेट(cid:332)ोिलयम और (cid:366)ाकृ ितक गैस मं(cid:361)ालय म(cid:336) रा(cid:475) मं(cid:361)ी ((cid:373)ी सुरेश गोपी) MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS (SHRI SURESH GOPI) (a) to (d): The Government has not implemented any scheme exclusively for promotion of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as an automotive fuel. However, the Government promotes the use of cleaner automotive fuels like Compressed Bio Gas (CBG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), LNG etc, in the transport sector through broader policy initiatives such as Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) for promotion of CBG, expansion of natural gas pipeline infrastructure, development of City Gas Distribution (CGD) networks including CNG stations, allocation of domestic gas on priority basis to CNG (Transport) and establishment of LNG terminals and LNG fuelling stations. Development of LNG infrastructure including establishment of LNG fuelling stations and deployment of LNG-based vehicles is primarily undertaken by Oil and Gas Marketing Companies (OGMCs) and private entities based on techno-commercial considerations. In order to cater to emerging Auto-LNG demand, OGMCs as well as private entities have set up more than 30 LNG fueling stations along the Golden Quadrilateral and other national highways. As informed by OGMCs, over 1300 LNG-fuelled trucks are presently plying on Indian roads, including vehicles manufactured by companies such as Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, Volvo and Blue Energy Motors.LNG, owing to its higher energy density and longer driving range, is considered suitable for long- haul heavy-duty vehicles and its use can contribute to reduction in vehicular emissions compared to conventional fuels. Government have placed LNG under Open General License (OGL) category. This allows buyers to freely import LNG as per their requirement on mutually agreed commercial terms with suppliers. Expansion of LNG as a transport fuel is expected to be driven by industry demand and techno- commercial viability. *****
