Parliament Question: Public and Private Investments in the Field of Artificial Intelligence

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 1851 TO BE ANSWERED ON: 11.02.2026 PUBLIC AND PRIVATE INVESTMENTS IN THE FIELD OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE 1851. SHRI MAGUNTA SREENIVASULU REDDY: SHRI PUTTA MAHESH KUMAR: Will the Minister of ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY be pleased to state: (a) the details of the total public and private investments made in the field of artificial intelligence in the country to date, year and sector-wise; (b) the details of the list of artificial intelligence infrastructure projects proposed, under consideration and presently operational across the country, State-wise especially for Andhra Pradesh; (c) the details of the list of domestic and international companies that have established major artificial intelligence infrastructure, research or computer facilities in the country during the last five years along with the nature and scale of such investments; (d) whether the Government has undertaken initiatives to enhance skilling, reskilling and capacity building of youth in artificial intelligence and allied emerging technologies; and (e) if so, the details of such programmes, coverage and outcomes achieved thereof? ANSWER MINISTER OF STATE FOR ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (SHRI JITIN PRASADA) (a) to (e): India’s AI strategy is based on the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of democratizing technology. In the Stanford Global AI Vibrancy 2025 report, India was ranked 3rd in the world for AI competitiveness and ecosystem vibrancy. India is also the second-largest contributor to GitHub AI projects, showcasing its vibrant developer community. IndiaAI Mission: In March 2024, Government of India launched IndiaAI mission with outlay of Rs 10,372 Cr for development of the overall AI ecosystem in the country. In less than 24 months, India AI Mission has set up a foundation for development of AI ecosystem in the country: • More than 38 thousand GPUs for common compute facility have been onboarded, which are being provided to Indian start-ups and academia at an affordable rate.• Twelve teams have been shortlisted for development of indigenous foundational models or Large Language Models. • Thirty applications have been approved for developing India specific AI applications. • More than 8000 undergraduate students, 5000 post graduate students and 500 PhD students are being supported for talent development. • 27 India Data and AI labs have been established and 543 more have been identified. India is actively participating in shaping global debate on development, usage and safety of AI. India was the founder chair of Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI). India is hosting the India AI Impact Summit 2026 from 16–20th February 2026 at New Delhi. For the first time, the global AI summit series will take place in the Global South. The shift signals a broader move toward a more inclusive global AI dialogue. Private Sector Investment in AI Encouraged by the Government’s initiatives, the private sector is increasingly investing in AI in India. According to the Stanford AI Index Report 2025, India’s cumulative private investment in AI from 2013 to 2024 reached approximately $11.1 Billion. Google has recently announced the establishment of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hub in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Andhra Pradesh. This investment of approximately $15 Billion dollars marks Google’s largest investment in India to date. Tata Group has announced a $11 Billion investment for an AI innovation city in Maharashtra. Additionally, under IndiaAI Mission, many private companies are investing along with the government to build a vibrant AI ecosystem in the country. Government is working for talent development and skilling in the AI domain to ensure India has talent scale to not just provide a robust AI space for India, but also for the world. Key initiatives taken by the government are: • IndiaAI FutureSkills: o This pillar under the IndiaAI Mission aims to develop AI skilled professionals in India by increasing the number of graduates, post-graduate and PhDs in AI domain. Government is providing support to: ▪ 500 PhD fellows ▪ 5,000 postgraduates ▪ 8,000 undergraduates 290 fellowships have been awarded till date. o 27 IndiaAI Data and AI Labs have been established in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, in collaboration with NIELIT, to impart foundation-level courses on AI, data and related fields such as Data Annotation, Data Curation, Data Cleaning, Data Science, etc. o 543 ITIs and Polytechnics across all States/UTs have been approved for setting up additional IndiaAI Data and AI Labs.• FutureSkills Prime: FutureSkills PRIME program is a collaborative initiative of MeitY and National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) aimed at making India a cutting-edge digital talent nation. Key features are: o Skilling, reskilling, and upskilling in emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Big Data Analytics, IoTs, Cyber Security, Blockchain, AR/VR, etc. o Courses are developed in the consultation with industry to align with actual employment needs. o Portal can be accessed anytime-anywhere to earn skill certificates in line with their aptitude and aspirations. o Accessible online at https://futureskillsprime.in/ o Under the programme, so far, more than 26.2 lakh candidates have registered on the portal, out of which there have been 16.65 lakh+ candidates enrolled/trained in various courses. ********
