On January 29, 2026, a question was raised in Lok Sabha regarding the purchase of LPG from the USA. Shri Khalilur Rahaman asked the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas whether the government has signed a deal to buy 2.2 Million Tonnes of LPG from the USA for the next year, whether the impending trade deal with the USA forced India to sign the gas deal, whether India is being forced to buy gas at a higher rate when cheaper options were available from Russia, and the price of gas from the USA as compared to gas from Russia.
Shri Suresh Gopi, Minister of State in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, responded that Public Sector Enterprises (PSEs), including Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), have successfully concluded a one-year structured contract to import around 2.2 MTPA of LPG from the United States (US) Gulf Coast for the contract year 2026. Decisions regarding import sources are taken by Oil and Gas PSEs after market due diligence, based on competitive rates and the need for diversifying sourcing options. Currently, there is no contract in place for importing LPG from Russia by PSEs.
