(a) whether the Government is aware of the fact that most of the raw materials used in
Ayurvedic medicines are found in forests and hilly areas and if so, the details thereof;
(b) whether the Government has set up any new institute to conduct research on such herbs
and if so, the details thereof along with the total number of such centers presently
running in the country;
(c) whether the Government is aware of the fact that there is vast scope for herbs in dense
forests of Valmiki Nagar Lok Sabha Constituency in Bihar which is adjacent to the
border of Nepal and if so, the details thereof;
(d) whether the Government is set to open a centre in Valmiki Nagar Lok Sabha
Consitituency of Bihar; and
(e) if so, the details thereof?

(a) Yes. The Government is aware of the fact that most of the raw materials used in
Ayurvedic medicines are found in forests. As per the Botanical Survey of India (BSI), an
organization under Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, mandated for survey of
plant diversity of the country, more than 8000 medicinal plants species are found in the country
including hilly areas. As per the BSI, about 1500 medicinal plants species found in Western
Himalaya, 3000 in Eastern Himalaya, 2000 in Western Ghats and 1500 in Eastern Ghats
including Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
(b) Yes. Presently, various Research Institutes/Centres/Units of different Research Councils
under the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India, viz. Central Council for Research in
Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM),
Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH), Central Council for Research in Siddha
(CCRS), North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda & Folk Medicine Research (NEIAFMR) and the
National Institute of Sowa Rigpa (NISR), have been established and engaged in the area of
medicinal plant research across the country. The State/UT-wise details of the Institutes/Centres
are appended in Annexure-I.Further, various national institutes under the Ministry of Ayush, viz. All India Institute of
Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi; National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA), Jaipur; National Institute of
Unani Medicine (NIUM), Bangalore; National Institute of Siddha (NIS), Chennai; Institute of
Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA) - an Institute of National Importance, Jamnagar and
North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy (NEIAH), Shillong are the apex teaching
institutes, also involved in academic research activities related to medicinal plants in the
concerned systems of medicines across the country.
In addition, the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, a frontier organization is also
working on medicinal plant research through its various laboratories/centres. The State / UT-
wise details are in Annexure-II.
Besides, the Directorate of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Research (DMAPR), Anand,
Gujarat, under the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR), conducts basic, applied and
adaptive research on medicinal plants.
