SHRI BIDYUT BARAN MAHATO: SHRI DINESHBHAI MAKWANA: Will the Minister of STEEL be pleased to state: (a) the number of registered trade unions in each unit of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL); (b) the number of members of the said registered trade unions in each unit of SAIL; (c) the details and process of selection of negotiating trade union by SAIL and its unit management; and (d) the year in which the last verification of trade union membership has been carried out in SAIL units? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STEEL (SHRI H.D. KUMARASWAMY) (a)to(d): A statement is laid on the Table of the Lok Sabha. *****STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (A) TO (D) OF THE LOK SABHA STARRED (*) QUESTION NO. *225 FOR ANSWER ON 04.08.2026 TABLED BY SHRI BIDYUT BARAN MAHATO, MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT AND SHRI DINESHBHAI MAKWANA, MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT REGARDING “REGISTERED TRADE UNIONS IN SAIL” (a)to(d): Steel Authority of India Limited(SAIL) has 64 registered trade unions comprising non-executive employees, who number around 38,694 as on 01.07.2026. Verification of trade union membership is carried out by the respective units from time to time as per applicable laws and guidelines, including the Trade Unions Act, 1926 and the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947, now subsumed in the Industrial Relations Code, 2020. Such verification was conducted in Rourkela Steel Plant, Salem Steel Plant and Visvesvaraya Iron & Steel Plant in 2024, Bhilai Steel Plant in 2022 and Durgapur Steel Plant in 2015. Recognition of trade unions at the plant/unit level is based on the exercise of verification to be carried out by the concerned regional labour authorities in accordance with the laid down procedure. ******
