GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF COAL RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 4029 ANSWERED ON 30.03.2026 RENEWABLE ENERGY INITIATIVES BY COAL PSUs 4029. SHRI ASHOKRAO SHANKARRAO CHAVAN: SMT. KIRAN CHOUDHRY: DR. PARMAR JASHVANTSINH SALAMSINH: Will the Minister of COAL be pleased to state (a) whether Coal India Limited and other coal PSUs are undertaking renewable energy projects as part of diversification initiatives; (b) if so, the details of the total renewable energy capacity installed or under development by these PSUs as of February, 2026; (c) the targets set by Government for renewable energy capacity by coal PSUs by 2030; and (d) the manner in which these initiatives contribute to sustainable mining and energy transition objectives? ANSWER MINISTER OF STATE FOR COAL AND MINES (SHRI SATISH CHANDRA DUBEY) (a) & (b): Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) under the Ministry of Coal i.e., Coal India Limited (CIL), Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), and NLC India Limited (NLCIL), are undertaking renewable energy projects as part of their diversification strategies. The renewable energy capacity installed and under development by these PSUs are as under: Name of PSU Installed Capacity Under Development/ Planned Coal India Limited ~247 MW (Solar) ~635 MW Singareni Collieries 245.50 MW (Solar) 259 MW Company Limited NLC India Limited 1,783 MW (Solar: 1,732 MW; 1,762 MW (Solar: 1,712 MW; Wind: 51 MW) Wind: 50 MW) (c): Coal PSUs have set ambitious renewable energy capacity targets by 2030 in line with national commitments - CIL (about 9.5 GW); SCCL (about 2.8 GW); and NLCIL (about 10 GW). 1(d): Renewable energy initiatives undertaken by coal PSUs contribute to sustainable mining and energy transition objectives in the following ways: (i) Reduction in carbon footprint through adoption of clean energy sources; (ii) Productive utilization of reclaimed and mined-out land for installation of solar power projects; (iii) Diversification of energy portfolio, thereby enhancing long-term energy security; (iv) Support to national climate commitments, including the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070; (v) Promotion of sustainable mining practices through eco-restoration and environmentally responsible infrastructure; (vi) Adoption of advanced technologies such as high-efficiency solar modules, battery energy storage systems, and integration of renewable energy with conventional power generation. ***** 2
