Parliament Question: Review of AMRUT

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 6272 TO BE ANSWERED ON APRIL 02, 2026 REVIEW OF AMRUT NO. 6272: SHRI SANJAY HARIBHAU JADHAV: Will the Minister of HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS be pleased to state: (a) whether the Government has reviewed the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and if so, the details thereof; (b) the impact of AMRUT on improvement of urban infrastructure such as water supply, sewerage and green spaces; (c) the number of urban households benefited under the said Mission, State-wise including Maharashtra; (d) the steps taken by the Government to address gaps in infrastructure development under the said Mission; (e) the number of urban households provided with tap water connections under the said Mission; (f) the improvements made in sewerage networks in urban areas across the country under AMRUT; and (g) the monitoring mechanisms in place to track the progress of projects under the said Mission? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS (SHRI TOKHAN SAHU) (a) to (f): Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) was launched on 25 June 2015 in selected 500 cities (485 cities including 15 merged cities) and towns across the country. The Mission was focused on development of basic infrastructure, in the selected cities and towns, in the sectors of water supply; sewerage and septage management; storm water drainage; green spaces and parks; and non-motorized urban transport. …2/--2- Under AMRUT, States/ Union Territories (UTs) were empowered to select, appraise, prioritise and implement the projects. The States/ Union Territories (UTs) have grounded 6,000 projects worth ₹83,493.22 crore under AMRUT, of which works worth around ₹81,177.67 crore have been physically completed. These projects include 1,403 water supply projects worth ₹43,378.59 crore, 889 sewerage/septage management projects worth ₹34,471.1 crore, 838 drainage projects worth ₹3,017.13 crore, 348 non-motorised urban transport projects worth ₹1,022.27 crore and 2,522 green spaces & park projects worth ₹1,604.13 crore. Through AMRUT/ AMRUT 2.0 and in convergence with the States, around 246 lakh water tap connections in the urban areas have been provided, 93,457.51 km of water pipeline network has been laid/ replaced and 5,429 Million Litre per Day (MLD) water treatment capacity have been created so far. In the sewage and septage management sector, around 182 lakh sewer connections (including households covered through Faecal Sludge and Septage Management (FSSM)) have been provided so far through AMRUT/ AMRUT 2.0 and in convergence in AMRUT Cities, 26,995.61 km of sewer network has been laid/ replaced completed and 5,178 MLD sewage treatment capacity has been created. As reported by the State/ UTs, the total number of households covered with new/ serviced water tap connections and sewer connections so far, State-wise including Maharashtra, are given in Annexure. Through the grounded green spaces and park projects under AMRUT, 5,286 acres of permeable green space area have been developed so far. Under Non-Motorised Urban Transport component of AMRUT, 431.14 km of pedestrian walkways and 43.2 km of cycle track has been created. (g): The Mission guidelines have specific provisions for formation of State High Powered Steering Committee (SHPSC) headed by the Chief Secretary of the State, to monitor and supervise the implementation of the scheme at the State/ UT level. State Level Technical Committee (SLTC) headed by the Secretary, Urban Development & Housing Department provides technical support to the SHPSC in monitoring and supervising the scheme at the State level. Further, an Apex Committee constituted under the ambit of Mission guidelines reviews and monitor the Mission periodically. Also, in order to fast-track the completion of projects, the progress is periodically reviewed & monitored through regular video conferences/ webinars/ workshops/ site-visits etc. by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) with the States/ UTs.
