Parliament Question: Setting up of Food Testing Laboratories

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF FOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRIES LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 965 ANSWERED ON 5TH FEBRUARY 2026 SETTING UP OF FOOD TESTING LABORATORIES 965. SHRI APPALANAIDU KALISETTI: DR. BYREDDY SHABARI: Will the Minister of FOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRIES be pleased to state: (a) the details of the number of Food Testing Laboratories set up or upgraded with assistance from the Ministry during the last five years, year-wise and State-wise, including Andhra Pradesh; (b) the funds allocated, sanctioned and utilised for each approved project, year-wise and State- wise; (c) the number of applications received, approved, rejected and pending from Government and private entities, including SC/ST applicants, State-wise; (d) whether special financial assistance has been provided to laboratories in difficult or backward areas and if so, the details thereof; and (e) whether the Ministry proposes expansion of the scheme through enhanced assistance or establishment of additional Government-led laboratories and if so, the details thereof? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR FOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRIES (SHRI RAVNEET SINGH) (a) The details of the number of Food Testing Laboratories set up or upgraded with assistance from the Ministry during the last five years, year-wise and State-wise, including Andhra Pradesh is given at Annexure-I. (b) The funds allocated, sanctioned and utilised for each approved project, year-wise and State- wise is given at Annexure-II (c) The list of number of applications received, approved and rejected from Government and private entities, including SC/ST applicants, State-wise is attached at Annexure-III. As on 31.10.2025, no application was pending. The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) has floated an Expression of Interest (EOI) on 21.11.2025, which is open till 10.02.2026, inviting applications for the setting up of 100 food testing laboratories across the country. (d) As per Scheme guidelines, Ministry provides financial assistance for setting-up of Food Testing Laboratories to eligible entities at 70% of the eligible cost of the equipment in Difficult Areas as well as for SC/ST applicants and at 50% in General Areas subject to a maximum of Rs Five Crore.
