SINGLE TEACHER SCHOOLS IN RAJASTHAN

Will the Minister of EDUCATION be pleased to state:
(a) whether more than one lakh posts of teachers are vacant in primary, middle and
secondary level Government schools of Rajasthan at present;
(b) if so, the total number of sanctioned teaching posts at the primary, middle and secondary
levels along with the details of vacant posts against the total sanctioned posts, district-wise;
(c) the number of such Government schools functioning in the said State where only one
teacher is posted along with the number of schools located in Sri Ganganagar and Hanumangarh
districts; and
(d) the details of the concrete steps taken by the Government to promptly fill up the vacant
teaching posts, eliminate single-teacher schools and improve the quality of education along
with the time-frame fixed in this regard?

(a) to (d): Education being a subject in the Concurrent List of the Constitution, majority of the
schools in the country come under the administrative control of States/UTs. The recruitment,
service conditions and rational deployment of teachers come under the purview of the
respective State Governments/UT Administrations. The details of the vacancies of the teachers
in schools are maintained by respective States/Union Territory Administrations. Recruitment
of teachers in schools is a continuous process and the vacancies keep arising due to retirement,
resignation and additional requirements on account of enhanced students’ strength/new schools.
The Central Government has been consistently pursuing the matter of expeditious recruitment
and redeployment of teachers with the States and UTs through periodic review meetings and
has advised to reduce the number of single teacher schools in the State if any.
