GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF FOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRIES LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 797 ANSWERED ON 04TH DECEMBER,2025 STATUS AND PERFORMANCE OF FOOD TESTING LABORATORIES 797. SHRI KRISHNA PRASAD TENNETI: Will the Minister of FOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRIES be pleased to state: (a) the total number of proposed/sanctioned under-construction and presently operational food-testing laboratories across the country, State-wise including Andhra Pradesh, district- wise; (b) whether the Government has considered establishing additional food-testing laboratories across the country during the last five years and if so, the details thereof, State- wise particularly Andhra Pradesh, district wise; (c) whether the Government maintains the data on the total number of food samples tested by these laboratories and if so, the details thereof including the total number of samples tested, those deemed unsafe or inedible and the action taken against such entities during the last five years, State-wise particularly for Andhra Pradesh, district-wise; and (d) the details regarding the funds allocated, released and utilised for the establishment of food-testing laboratories during the last five years, State-wise? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR FOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRIES (SHRI RAVNEET SINGH ) a) Since the implementation of the Food Safety & Quality Assurance Infrastructure (FSQAI) Scheme, a total of 205 projects for setting up/upgradation of food testing laboratories have been approved, of which 172 projects have been completed and 33 are currently ongoing. State/UT- wise details of the projects sanctioned for financial assistance for setting up/upgradation of food-testing laboratories under the Food Safety & Quality Assurance Infrastructure Scheme of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), including state of Andhra Pradesh are provided in Annexure-I. b) The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) does not establish food-testing laboratories on its own. The Food Safety & Quality Assurance Infrastructure Scheme operates on a demand-driven basis and MOFPI provides financial assistance for setting up/upgradation of Food Testing Laboratories under the scheme. Proposals are invited on SAMPADA Portal of the Ministry, through Expressions of Interest (EOI) floated time to time. Funds are allocated to proposals selected on merit, as per the Scheme Guidelines available on the Ministry’s website. Details of the EOIs issued over the past five years are provided in Annexure-II. c) The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MOFPI) does not maintain data on the total number of food samples tested.
