GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF PORTS, SHIPPING AND WATERWAYS RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 1169 ANSWERED ON 10.02.2026 STATUS, DELAYS AND STRATEGIC REVIEW OF TAJPUR DEEP SEA PORT PROJECT IN WEST BENGAL 1169. SH. SAMIK BHATTACHARYA: Will the Minister of PORTS, SHIPPING AND WATERWAYS be pleased to state: (a) whether Government is aware that Tajpur Deep Sea Port in West Bengal has remained stalled for several years, despite its strategic maritime and logistical importance; (b) whether it is a fact that the withdrawal by the Adani Group, citing issues of commercial viability, statutory clearances and coordination with the State Government; (c) whether the Ministry has reviewed the reasons for delay, including land acquisition, environmental approvals, bidding framework and State-level execution bottlenecks; and (d) whether the Union Government proposes to undertake a fresh feasibility study and DPR and explore alternative implementation or investment models to revive the project? ANSWER MINISTER OF PORTS, SHIPPING AND WATERWAYS (SHRI SARBANANDA SONOWAL) (a) to (d) Other than Major Ports (OTMPs) are under the administrative control of the State Government/ State Maritime Board. In the year 2022, Govt. of West Bengal had floated Request for Quotation (RFQ)-cum- Request for Proposal (RFP) for development of Green field OTMP proposed at Tajpur in West Bengal and declared Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited as the selected bidder. A letter of Intent to Award (LoIA) was issued subsequently. Recently, Government of West Bengal has again invited bids for RFQ-cum-RFP towards development of Tajpur Port on 01st December, 2025. *****
