Parliament Question: Steel production to cater to domestic industry

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF STEEL RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 3983 FOR ANSWER ON 27.03.2026 STEEL PRODUCTION TO CATER TO DOMESTIC INDUSTRY 3983. SHRI PARIMAL NATHWANI: Will the Minister of STEEL be pleased to state: (a) whether country is producing enough steel to cater to the need of domestic industry; (b) the total quantum of steel slag (in million tones) generated by integrated steel plants operating in the country, during the last three financial years, especially in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat; and (c) whether Government has introduced any scheme to incentivise the steel industry? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE (SHRI BHUPATHIRAJU SRINIVASA VARMA) MINISTRY OF STEEL (a) India is the world’s second-largest producer of crude steel with 152.18 million tonnes (MT) crude steel production in Financial Year 2024-25. Steel production increased from 138.178 MT to 153.61 MT, while consumption rose from 137.85 MT to 147.72 MT during April–February 2025–26 over the corresponding period of the previous year, with production registering a growth of 11.2%. India has been net exporter in the current financial year. (b) The amount of steel slag generated by Steel Central Public Sector Enterprises(CPSEs) in the country during the financial year 2024–25 is 3.47 million tonnes. (c) Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Specialty Steel was launched in July, 2021 with an outlay of ₹6,322 crore to promote the manufacturing of “Specialty Steel” within the country by attracting capital investment, generate employment and promote technology up-gradation in the steel sector. *****
