CIPET, an autonomous body under the Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals, supports the industry through skill development, technology support services, and diploma/degree courses in petrochemicals, plastics, and allied fields. It also houses specialized Research & Development (R&D) centers.
CIPET contributes to the "Make in India" and "Atmanirbhar Bharat" initiatives by providing a skilled workforce. It offers skill development and upgrade programs in specialized technical domains like polymers and petrochemicals. CIPET has significantly increased its training capacity over the past five years, with the number of students trained in academic and skill programs as follows: 33,846 (2020-21), 38,814 (2021-22), 59,986 (2022-23), 65,583 (2023-24), and 74,964 (2024-25).
The establishment of new CIPET centers is based on assessments of regional demand for skills, technical support, and R&D in the petrochemical sector, conducted by the Central Government, State Governments, and CIPET itself. Currently, CIPET has 48 functional centers across the country, including 9 Institutes of Petrochemicals Technology (IPTs), 32 Centres for Skilling & Technical Support (CSTS), 3 Schools for Advanced Research in Petrochemicals (SARP), and 4 Sub-Centres. Sixteen new CIPET centers have been established in the last 10 years to expand its presence and capabilities in underserved regions.

(a) the current role and future roadmap envisioned by the Ministry for Central Institute of
Petrochemicals Engineering & Technology (CIPET) in supporting the national petrochemical
and plastic industries;
(b) the infrastructure and training capacity of CIPET to meet the skilled manpower
requirements projected under key Government initiatives like ‘Make in India’ and
‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’;
(c) whether the Government has assessed the regional demand for skill centres and R&D in the
Plastics and Petrochemical sector; and
(d) if so, the steps being taken to expand CIPET’s presence and capabilities in underserved
regions?

a) Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering & Technology (CIPET), an Autonomous
Body under the Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals, Government of India, supports
the petrochemicals and plastics industry by imparting sector-specific Skill Development,
Technology Support Services to the industry and providing Diploma and Degree Courses in
petrochemicals, plastics and allied fields. CIPET also has specialized Research & Developmentcentres dedicated to various activities for the growth of Petrochemicals & allied industries in
the country.
(b) CIPET plays a vital role in developing the skilled workforce required to power this
transformation. Currently, various skill development and skill upgradation programs in
specialized technical domains like polymers and petrochemicals are offered by CIPET.
Through the years, CIPET has increased its capacity to provide training through its academic
and skill development programs. The details for the last 5 years have been tabulated below:

country which includes 09 Institutes of Petrochemicals Technology (IPTs), 32 Centres for
Skilling & Technical Support (CSTS), 03 School for Advanced Research in Petrochemicals
(SARP) and 04 Sub-Centres. In the last 10 years, 16 new CIPET centers have been established.
