On 08.12.2025, Unstarred Question No-1334, submitted to the LOK Sabha, inquired about the status of toilets in government schools. Shri Adhikari Deepak Dev asked for the percentage of government schools with non-functional/not useable and useable toilets, State/UT-wise; the number of schools with non-functional/not useable and useable toilets for girls, State/UT-wise; and whether the government has set any targets for total coverage of useable toilets.
Shri Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, responded that State/UT-wise percentage of Government schools having toilets facility, functional toilets facility, girls toilets facility and functional girls toilets facility for the year 2024-25 are available at https://www.education.gov.in/en/parl_ques.
Education is in the concurrent list of the Constitution. The Department of School Education and Literacy launched Samagra Shiksha w.e.f. 2018-19, under which States and UTs are supported for the strengthening of existing Government schools, and for creation and augmentation of infrastructure facilities including girl's and boy's toilets as per proposals received from respective States/UTs.

Will the Minister of EDUCATION be pleased to state:
(a) the details of percentage of Government schools having non-functional/not useable and useable
toilets in the country, State/UT-wise;
(b) the number of schools having non-functional/not useable and useable toilets for girls in the country,
State/UT-wise; and
(c) whether the Government has set any targets towards total coverage of useable toilets in Government
schools in the country, if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) and (b): As per UDISE+, State/UT wise percentage of Government schools having toilets facility,
functional toilets facility, girls toilets facility and functional girls toilets facility for the year 2024-25 are
available at https://www.education.gov.in/en/parl_ques.
(c): Education is in the concurrent list of the Constitution and most of the schools are under the
jurisdiction of concerned States and UTs. The Department of School Education and Literacy has
launched an Integrated Centrally Sponsored Scheme for School Education Samagra Shiksha w.e.f.
2018-19. Under Samagra Shiksha, States and UTs are supported for strengthening of existing
Government schools, and for creation and augmentation of infrastructure facilities including girl’s and
boy’s toilets as per proposals received from respective States/UTs.
