Parliament Question: Violence against Hindus in Bangladesh

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 2313 ANSWERED ON 12/03/2026 VIOLENCE AGAINST HINDUS IN BANGLADESH 2313. DR. VIKRAMJIT SINGH SAHNEY SHRI SHAKTISINH GOHIL Will the Minister of EXTERNAL AFFAIRS be pleased to state: (a) whether Government is aware of recent reports of violence, mob attacks and killings targeting Hindus and other religious minorities in Bangladesh, including lynching and attacks on homes, temples and businesses; (b) the number of such incidents reported since 2024 and the specific diplomatic engagements undertaken with the Government of Bangladesh to ensure the safety and protection of minorities; (c) whether Government has raised these concerns bilaterally or at international fora and the outcomes of such engagements; and (d) the consular support or assistance mechanisms in place for affected Indian citizens or persons of Indian origin in Bangladesh? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS (SHRI PABITRA MARGHERITA) (a to d) The Government of India continuously monitors incidents of attacks against minorities in Bangladesh, including on their homes, properties, businesses and places of worship. As per available data from human rights organizations, about 3100 incidents of violence against Hindu and other minorities have taken place across Bangladesh from August 2024 till February 2026. India has consistently raised the matter of safety and security of the minorities with the authorities in Bangladesh at all relevant occasions, including at the highest level. The issue has also been discussed with foreign interlocutors. It is the expectation of the Government of India that the Government of Bangladesh will thoroughly investigate these incidents and bring all perpetrators of killings, arson and violence against minorities to justice. The primary responsibility for the protection of life and liberty of all citizens of Bangladesh, including minorities, rests with the Government of Bangladesh. Indian Mission and Posts in Bangladesh ensure that distressed Indian nationals are extended help and support promptly. Mission remains accessible to all Indian citizens in Bangladesh through a 24x7 emergency helpline number. Indian Mission in Dhaka has a dedicated Consular Officer for addressing grievances and concerns of Indian citizens. The Mission regularly engages with Indian community members in order to address their various concerns. The Mission also conducts regular ‘Open House’ for Indian nationals. *****
