Parliament Question: Visakhapatnam port industrialisation under Sagarmala

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF PORTS, SHIPPING AND WATERWAYS RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 3675 ANSWERED ON 24.03.2026 VISAKHAPATNAM PORT INDUSTRIALISATION UNDER SAGARMALA 3675. SHRI GOLLA BABURAO: Will the Minister of PORTS, SHIPPING AND WATERWAYS be pleased to state: (a) how much land was allotted for Visakhapatnam Port Trust for industrialization under the National Perspective Plan of SagarmalaProgramme; (b) the status of industrialization of Visakhapatnam Port since allotment of land; (c) how much employment could be generated and the quantum of economic activity increased due to above industrialization; and (d) the status of industrial corridor project implementation between Visakhapatnam and Chennai? ANSWER MINISTER OF PORTS, SHIPPING AND WATERWAYS (SHRI SARBANANDA SONOWAL) (a) No land has been allotted to Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) under the National Perspective Plan of the SagarmalaProgramme. However, VPA has allotted about 53.025 acres of land under a joint venture with M/s Balmer & Lawrie for development of a Multi Modal Logistics Park (MMLP). (b) The Multi Modal Logistics Park has been developed by M/s Balmer & Lawrie with facilities such as warehouses, cold storage, open yard and rail siding. The project was implemented in Phase-I and Phase-II during the period 2015–2019at an approximate cost of₹487 crore. (c) The project has generated employment for approximately 300 persons. The development of logistics infrastructure has also facilitated increased economic and cargo handling activities in the region. (d) Under the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme, Government of India has approved the development of a greenfield industrial smart city at Kopparthy Industrial Area under the Visakhapatnam–Chennai Industrial Corridor (VCIC) in Andhra Pradesh, spread over2,595 acres with an estimated cost of ₹2,137 crore. A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), namely Andhra Pradesh Industrial Corridor Infrastructure Development Corporation (APICDC)has been formed for implementation of this project. Further,Programme Manager for New Cities (PMNC) and Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor have been appointed. *****
