New Beginnings

The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of
India, marked a significant milestone in the lives of its graduating students with the Combined
Convocation 2026 in New Delhi on 31 August 2026. The ceremony brought together graduates from 18
NIFT campuses across the country, turning the occasion into a collective celebration of academic
accomplishment, creative endeavours and the journey from learning to professional life.
The ceremony was graced by the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, Visitor of NIFT, as
the Chief Guest. Union Minister of Textiles Shri Giriraj Singh Secretary , Textiles Smt Neelam Shami Rao
, DG,NIFT Smt Tanu Kashyap, distinguished dignitaries, members of the Board of Governors, senior
officials, faculty members, PhD scholars and graduating students attended the event.Speaking on the occasion, the President said that the textile and apparel sector is not just a part of our
cultural heritage, but it has also been the backbone of the livelihoods of millions of people. If the
traditional artisans receive the support and guidance, it will encourage their next generations to remain
engaged in this profession with pride and confidence. She was happy to note that various NIFT centres
have implemented programmes like the 'Craft Cluster Initiative' to acquaint weavers and artisans in their
respective regions with modern techniques in the textile and apparel sector and to connect them with
markets. The President said that today, our country is expanding its role on the global stage with far
greater confidence than ever before. Fashion Technology is also a field with immense potential to enhance
India’s global footprint. She urged graduating students to seize this opportunity. She said that in this
endeavour, students should maintain a global outlook while remaining firmly connected to their roots and
the core values of our culture. By doing so, they will not only become successful professionals but also
contribute to the preservation and enrichment of India’s cultural heritage.Addressing the gathering Union Minister of Textiles Shri Giriraj Singh urged the students to dream big
and work hard to become the integral driving force of Vikasit Bharat. Secretray Textiles Smt Neelam
Shami Rao while congratulating the graduating students , asked them to pursue continuous learning and
upgrading skills and thus to seize the vast opportunities.
The Convocation recognised the dedication and accomplishments of students who have completed their
academic programmes at NIFT. Their time at the institute was shaped by exploration, collaboration and
exposure to the changing needs of the fashion and creative industries.During the Convocation, the Director General, NIFT administered the pledge to the graduating students
and symbolically conferred degrees upon the graduating batch. A key highlight of the ceremony was the
presentation of 10 Gold Medals to the Best Academic Performers, representing NIFT’s academic
programmes across India. Selected on the basis of outstanding academic performance, taking into account
their CGPA and semester-wise SGPA, the ten awardees were presented the Gold Medals by the Hon’ble
President of India, recognising academic excellence across NIFT.Following the central Convocation ceremony, campus-wise degree distribution ceremonies were held,
providing graduates an opportunity to formally receive their degrees and celebrate the milestone alongside
their respective academic communities.
Founded in 1986 under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, National Institute of Fashion
Technology (NIFT) is a statutory institute governed by the NIFT Act, 2006. The institute has played a
pioneering role in shaping India’s fashion education landscape by creating an interdisciplinary learning
environment where design, technology, craftsmanship, research, innovation and industry perspectives
converge.
Across its 20 professionally managed campuses, NIFT continues to nurture diverse talent and encourage
students to explore new ideas, challenge conventional approaches and develop solutions relevant to a
rapidly changing creative economy. Its educational approach combines contemporary learning with an
appreciation of India’s rich craft, cultural and design traditions.
For the graduating cohort, the 2026 Convocation represents a passage from preparation to possibility. The
knowledge gained, projects undertaken, collaborations forged and challenges overcome during their time
at NIFT will serve as building blocks for their careers and creative pursuits.
The graduates now join a growing community of NIFT alumni contributing across fashion, textiles,
design, technology, entrepreneurship, communication and allied creative fields. With an understanding of
both India’s cultural inheritance and contemporary global trends, they are poised to bring fresh
perspectives to the industries and communities they serve.
The Combined Convocation 2026 with 3793 students graduating including Undergraduate, Post Graduate
and PhD brought together achievement, aspiration and the promise of what lies ahead. As the graduates’
step into diverse professional and creative spaces, they carry with them the learning, values and
experiences that have shaped their time at NIFT. Their journeys ahead will add new dimensions to India’s
fashion, design and creative landscape, reflecting the talent and potential of a generation ready to create
with purpose, lead with imagination and contribute to the making of a Viksit Bharat.
