**Summary:**
As of July 24, 2025, Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) has been reported in ten Indian states: Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Mizoram, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. Currently, active cases are concentrated in Maharashtra. To combat the disease, the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying has been providing financial assistance to states/Union Territories under the Assistance to State for Control of Animal Diseases (ASCAD) program, part of the Livestock Health and Disease Control Program (LHDCP), to procure vaccines and support related disease control activities. In 2024-25, Rs. 196.61 crore has already been disbursed. Central Expert Teams are also providing technical support through on-site visits and virtual meetings. Guidelines and advisories on LSD control, including vaccination and treatment protocols, have been disseminated to states/UTs.
A permanent strategy to prevent future outbreaks includes the following key components:
1. Implementation of the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme (LHDCP) across all states/UTs, focusing on prophylactic vaccination, veterinary service capacity building, disease surveillance, and infrastructure strengthening.
2. Support for states/UTs under ASCAD to establish and strengthen laboratories and Biological Production Units (BPUs) for disease diagnosis and vaccine/diagnostic kit production, alongside capacity building and training on best practices.
3. Formulation of disease-specific National Action Plans (NAPs) and guidelines for prevention and control, including area identification, animal isolation, and biosecurity implementation.
4. Utilization of a Crisis Management Plan (CMP) for Livestock diseases to manage and respond to outbreaks, ensuring rapid containment and mitigation.
5. Development of Standard Veterinary Treatment Guidelines (SVTGs) to promote best practices in veterinary care.
6. Provision of 100% central assistance to ICAR-NIVEDI, Bengaluru, for serosurveillance, seromonitoring, disease diagnosis, and personnel training. Early warnings and alerts are also disseminated in local languages via the NADRES platform.
As of July 24, 2025, a total of 2817.15 lakh animals have been vaccinated against LSD across various states/UTs since 2022. Key states with high vaccination numbers include Uttar Pradesh (469.87 lakh), Maharashtra (413.41 lakh), Madhya Pradesh (300.94 lakh), Bihar (284.04 lakh), Rajasthan (268.46 lakh) and Odisha (251.63 lakh).
