Executive Summary & Key Takeaways

**Summary:** A routine review of the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED) initiatives was conducted, as stated by the Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs, Shri Durgadas Uikey, in response to a question in Lok Sabha on August 7, 2025. Key challenges identified include market demand for tribal products, delays in fund utilization by State Implementing Agencies, and market linkages. Financial assistance to TRIFED over the past five years is as follows (in crores INR): 2020-21 (170.74), 2021-22 (255.90), 2022-23 (135.27), 2023-24 (151.28), and 2024-25 (111.70). TRIFED has sanctioned 4130 Van Dhan Vikas Kendras (VDVKs) under the Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Vikas Mission (PMJVM), benefiting 1,235,308 individuals, and 531 PVTG VDVKs under Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adiwasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PMJANMAN), benefiting 45,480 individuals. These VDVKs have collectively reported sales of tribal products totaling INR 129.86 crores to date. Furthermore, TRIFED has procured INR 97.18 crores worth of products from empanelled tribal artisans and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) over the last five years for marketing through Tribes India outlets and various e-commerce platforms. The review found no significant delays or gaps in procurement, marketing, or payment disbursement to tribal artisans and suppliers. The VDVKs established under PMJANMAN and PMJVM are involved in promotional activities aimed at improving the livelihoods of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) and other tribal communities in remote areas, including those affected by Left-Wing Extremism (LWE). Currently, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs has no plans to restructure TRIFED. A third-party review of TRIFED schemes has not been recently conducted.
