This document is the Tamil Nadu Government Gazette, issued on Wednesday, February 9, 2022. It includes an ordinance, Tamil Nadu Ordinance No. 6/2021, which amends the Tamil Nadu Agricultural Produce Marketing (Regulation) Act of 1987.
The ordinance extends the term of Special Officers managing market committees. Specifically, it amends Section 33 of the 1987 Act to replace "ten years and six months" with "eleven years and six months" in the proviso to sub-section (1).
The explanation details that previously, the government was authorized to appoint special officers to manage market committees for a maximum of three years. This period was extended through amendments to Section 33(1), with the term ultimately extended to ten years and six months via Tamil Nadu Act 31/2021. This term was set to expire on November 29, 2021.
Members were appointed to 24 market committees except for Tiruchirappalli and Cuddalore market committees. Chairman and vice-chairman were elected for 23 market committees, excluding Theni market committee. The special officer's term was extended to the date the members assumed responsibility, and for Tiruchirappalli, Cuddalore, and Theni market committees, the term was extended to November 29, 2021.
Subsequently, members appointed to the 24 market committees were recalled on July 23, 2021, and special officers were appointed for a year in 23 market committees, excluding Tiruchirappalli, Cuddalore, and Theni.
As the extended term of the special officers for Tiruchirappalli, Cuddalore, and Theni market committees was expiring on November 29, 2021, and more time was needed to appoint members, it became necessary to extend the term for another year or until the reconstitution of the said market committees, whichever was earlier. Hence, the government decided to amend Tamil Nadu Act 27/1989 accordingly.
The ordinance is ordered by the Governor.
