Mumbai : 21 July 2026 The Indian team of six contestants performed well at the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad

(IMO) 2026 held in Shanghai, China, winning 2 Gold and 4 Silver medals. The (unofficial) country rank is 7th out of 117 countries. Around 666 students participated in the event, making it the largest IMO in the history of the Olympiad, which began in 1959.

Since 2019, Indian IMO teams have won at least one Gold medal at every IMO except IMO 2020, in which India could not participate due to the pandemic. Of the total 25 Gold medals won by India since its debut in 1989, 14 have been won in the last seven editions of the Olympiad.

In terms of team ranking, this is the fourth instance of India securing the 7th rank at the IMO, equalling its performances in 1998, 2001 and 2025. India's best-ever performance remains the 4th rank, achieved at the 65th International Mathematical Olympiad in 2024. This is also the fourth consecutive year that India has finished among the top 10 countries at the IMO. Since its debut in 1989, India has secured a top-10 finish on eight occasions in 36 appearances (excluding 2020 when India did not participate due to the pandemic).

So far, India has won 25 Gold, 80 Silver and 80 Bronze medals, besides 29 Honourable Mentions at the International Mathematical Olympiad.

The Indian medal winners are:

1. Mr. Aarav Gupta (Delhi) ---- GOLD

2. Mr. Abel George Mathew (Karnataka) ----- GOLD3. Mr. Bairav Murugan (Karnataka) —-- SILVER

4. Mr. Kanav Talwar (Delhi) —-- SILVER

5. Ms. Sanjana Philo Chacko (Kerala) —- SILVER

6. Ms. Shreya Shantanu Mundhada (Mumbai) —-- SILVER The Indian team was accompanied by Mr. Anant Mudgal, CEO, Mathelots Pvt. Ltd., as Team Leader; Dr.

Mainak Ghosh, HBCSE, Mumbai, as Deputy Leader; Mr. Siddharth Choppara, B.Sc. student, CMI, Chennai as Observer A and Mr. Adhitya Mangudy, BS student, MIT, USA, as Observer B.

Mr. Anant Mudgal, Mr. Siddharth Choppara and Mr. Adhitya Mangudy are former IMO medallists.

Together, they have won 2 Gold, 2 Silver and 4 Bronze medals for India as contestants.

Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) has congratulated the students and their mentors on this achievement and acknowledged the support of the Chennai Mathematical Institute for hosting the IMOTC 2026, as well as the NBHM (DAE) and the Ministry of Education for supporting the Mathematical Olympiad Programme since its inception.
