The CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO), Goa, celebrated World
Ocean Day 2026 at its auditorium today, with a focus on the critical role oceans play
in sustaining life on the Earth through climate regulation, biodiversity conservation
and support to livelihoods.
Addressing the audience at the event, Union Minister of State for Power and New
and Renewable Energy Shri Shripad Naik, who attended the program as the chief
guest, said the theme of World Ocean Day serves as a reminder that oceans are not
merely vast water bodies surrounding land but the very foundation of life on Earth.Talking about the rapid changes the oceans are undergoing due to climate change,
ocean warming, sea-level rise, deoxygenation, marine pollution and ocean
acidification, the minister said that those challenges have a direct impact on coastal
communities, fisheries, coral reefs, mangroves and marine biodiversity. “Addressing
these challenges requires robust scientific understanding, long-term observations,
advanced technologies and innovative solutions. Institutions such as CSIR-NIO are
at the forefront of this effort,” he said.
Calling for collective action to tackle the challenges, the minister urged citizens to
contribute towards reducing marine pollution, protecting coastal habitats,
conserving biodiversity, promoting sustainable fisheries and strengthening climate
resilience. “Every citizen has a role to play in safeguarding our oceans for future
generations,” he said.
At the event, the minister also distributed prizes and certificates to winners of
competitions organised by the institute as part of the World Ocean Day celebrations.
Earlier, NIO Director Prof Sunil Kumar Singh welcomed the gathering and spoke
about the institute's ongoing efforts in advancing ocean science and research.
