Government Launches Youth-Led JOSH Teams to Accelerate TB Elimination

India is deploying its youth network to track down undiagnosed tuberculosis cases before transmission spreads further into rural households. Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda rolled out the Joint Squad for Health, or JOSH Teams, under the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan in New Delhi. The initiative mobilises NCC cadets, NSS members, and MY Bharat volunteers to identify symptomatic individuals and connect them to formal healthcare.

The first phase begins across 55 districts in 11 states and union territories, backed by a dedicated mobile application for real-time tracking. Volunteers will pair door-to-door community outreach with modern screening tools, including AI-enabled portable X-ray devices and rapid molecular testing. The effort seeks to bridge the critical gap between initial symptom onset and clinical diagnosis at block and panchayat levels.

The rollout coincides with notable progress in India's national elimination metrics. Official data indicates India achieved a 21 percent decline in TB incidence alongside 92 percent treatment coverage, significantly outpacing global benchmarks. Furthermore, local verification has certified 67,933 gram panchayats across 697 districts as TB-free in 2026.

Sustaining that progress now hinges on finding unreached patients living with undetected disease outside public clinics. By enlisting youth volunteers to dismantle social stigma and encourage early testing, the Health Ministry aims to clear the final operational hurdles and beat the global 2030 elimination target.
