**Policy Summary: Desilting and Rehabilitation of Water Resources**
The Government of India is addressing water resource management through two key initiatives: the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojna (PMKSY) with "Har Khet Ko Pani" (HKKP) component and the Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Program (DRIP).
Under the PMKSY-HKKP, the Repair, Renovation, and Restoration (RRR) of Water Bodies scheme receives central assistance for works including desilting, conveyance system repairs, bund strengthening, weir and sluice repairs, catchment treatment, command area development, and soil erosion prevention. From FY 2016-17 up to March 31, 2025, the government released ₹545.35 crore, restoring an irrigation potential of 1.20 lakh hectares and reviving 191 million cubic meters (MCM) of water storage capacity. State-wise details for central assistance released, irrigation potential restored, and storage revival are available.
The Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Program (DRIP) Phase II & III, co-financed by the World Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), focuses on improving dam safety and efficiency through rehabilitation, emergency plans, and capacity building. While DRIP does not have dedicated desilting funds, need-based desiltation of selected dams is considered. The scheme includes 19 States and 3 Central Agencies. The project's completion date is March 2031. The approved fund allocation for Phase II and III totals ₹5107 crore and ₹5104 crore respectively. Benefits include improved dam safety, operational performance, and institutional strengthening.
