Under Namami Gange Mission Phase II, the operationalisation of 5 sewerage infrastructure projects
during the 3rd quarter of FY 2025–26 marks another significant step towards strengthening pollution
abatement and river rejuvenation efforts across multiple States. During the FY 25-26, so far 9 projects
have been made operational, enhancing sewage treatment capacity in key urban centres. Till Q2 Udham
Singh Nagar (Uttrakhand), Moradabad (UP), Maheshtala (WB) and Jangipur (WB) have been
operationalised.
With the commissioning of these 5 projects, the total STP capacity commissioned under the Namami
Gange Programme has reached 3,976 MLD, while the total number of Sewage Treatment Plants
(STPs) commissioned now stands at 173. These achievements reinforce the Mission’s core objective of
preventing untreated sewage from entering rivers and improving urban sanitation infrastructure.
In Shuklagunj, Uttar Pradesh, pollution abatement efforts have received a major boost with the
commissioning of a 5 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant, developed at a cost of ₹65 crore. The project,
implemented under the Hybrid Annuity Model, is based on Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR)
technology. The project will benefit a population of approximately three lakh people, ensure effective
interception and diversion of sewage and prevent its discharge into the River Ganga.

In Agra, Uttar Pradesh, a key city along the Yamuna basin, two STPs with capacities of 31 MLD and 35
MLD have been commissioned during Q3 under the Pollution Abatement Works, Agra project.
Sanctioned at a total cost of ₹842 crore, the project envisages a cumulative capacity of 177.6 MLDacross 13 STPs. Implemented under the HAM Model using SBR technology, the project will benefit
nearly 25 lakh residents, significantly reducing the flow of untreated sewage into the River Yamuna and
improving the city’s sanitation profile.

In the holy city of Varanasi, a 55 MLD STP at Assi–BHU has been made operational under a project
sanctioned at ₹308 crore. Based on SBR technology and implemented under the DBOT model, the
project will serve a population of around 18 lakh people. The commissioning of this facility is expected to
play a crucial role in protecting the River Ganga from sewage pollution while strengthening long-term
wastewater management in the city.

In North Barrackpore, West Bengal, one 30 MLD STP has been commissioned during Q3 under a
project sanctioned at ₹154 crore, out of a planned total capacity of 38 MLD across two STPs.
Implemented under the HAM Model and designed to meet NGT norms, the project will benefit
approximately 2.2 lakh people, contributing to improved sanitation and preventing untreated sewage

In addition, the Patna Kankarbagh STP in Bihar, which was earlier partially commissioned with a
capacity of 15 MLD, is increased to 30 MLD during Q3 of FY 2025–26, further strengthening sewage
treatment infrastructure in the city and supporting pollution abatement efforts along the Ganga.

sanitation, while also reinforcing the mission's core objective of sustainable and holistic river
rejuvenation.
