No. 3542/P&D1/1/2023, dated 03.02.2023. Order: No. 150, Health and Family Welfare (H2) Department, 9th May 2023. In her letter read above, the Director of Medical Education has stated that the Directorate of Medical Education, is currently leading with 36 Government Medical colleges ·and 29 other tertiary Institutions in the State of Tamil Nadu with a total bed strength of 62,861, Average daily Out Patient attendance 99,413 and average daily In Patient admission 38,958. In 36 teaching Government Medical Colleges, there are 5,050 MBBS students, 2,264 MD/MS’ Post Graduates, 404 DM/MCh. Super Speciality Post Graduates and 10,945 Allied Health Professional students admitted annually. There are 8 Multi Disciplinary Research units, 5 Virology Research Laboratories and 1 Model Rural Health Research Unit in the State which are attached. with the respective Government Medical Colleges. The teaching Institutes have 250+ ongoing faculty Research Projects, 3,072 Post Graduate studies, and 200+ Under graduate studies. All the teaching Institutes have normed research ethical-Committees and scientific advisory committee. 2. The Director of Medical Education has also stated that the Directorate of Medical Education is contributing to the State Health Care in Medical Education, Medical Research, Clinical services and Outreach services. Institutions of Tamil Nadu are the major contributors to the National Statistics in terms of numbers of patients treated, number of major procedures, high end interventions and surgeries, MBBS seats in Government Sector of a State, Post Graduate and Super Speciality seats etc., the existing name of the “Directorate of Medical Education does not fully reflect the objective of the Directorate and its constituent institutions. Many States in India to name some of them Maharashtra, Punjab, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana have already named the Directorates of the respective States as “Directorate of Medical Education and Research.” 3. The Director of Medical Education has further stated that change of name reflect the role of the Institutes in contributing to the State Health Care in terms of Medical Education, Medical Research, Clinical Services and Outreach services, which will help in creating an attitudinal shift in its faculty and staff, institutional administration and general Public, which will encourage and activate the stake holders in undertaking quality research resulting in greater contribution of our teaching institutes to the State and National data pertaining to research and development. The Director of Medical Education has requested the Government to rename the "Directorate of Medical Education'' as "Directorate of Medical Education and Research'' in English and ''மருத்துவக் கல்வி மற்றும் ஆராய்ச்சி இயக்ககம்'' in Tamil. 4. The Government have examined the proposal of the Director of Medical Education and decided to accept the same. Accordingly, the Government hereby order that the nomenclature of the “Directorate of Medical Education" be renamed as “Directorate of Medical Education and Research'' in English and ''மருத்துவக் கல்வி மற்றும் ஆராய்ச்சி இயக்ககம்'' in Tamil. 5.
