The Ministry of Culture's "Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar" (MGMD) scheme aims to document and preserve the unique cultural heritage of villages across India. As of August 4, 2025, approximately 4.7 lakh villages out of a total of 6.5 lakh identified villages have had their data uploaded to the MGMD portal. In Tamil Nadu, 14,251 out of 19,219 villages have been mapped and their data uploaded.
The MGMD portal captures linguistic, cultural, and heritage practices, including temple architecture, folk arts, and classical traditions, with specific attention to distinct traditions of Tamil Nadu such as Siddha medicine and local art forms. The program utilizes a crowdsourcing option to encourage local community participation in documenting and validating cultural information.
While the government is promoting heritage villages through cultural tourism, digital platforms, and educational initiatives, there are currently no specific initiatives exclusively for the villages of Tamil Nadu and no economic or skill development benefit extended to the villagers under this initiative.
For further information, contact Sunil Kumar Tiwari at pibcultureatgmaildotcom. State-wise and district-wise details for Tamil Nadu are available in Annexure I and Annexure II, respectively.
