The “Fun Science” Interactive Gallery was inaugurated today to commemorate the
40th anniversary of the Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai. Designed to bring the joy of
scientific exploration to students and visitors, the gallery adds a new dimension to
the Centre’s mission of promoting experiential learning. Nehru Science Centre - the
largest science centre under the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM),
Ministry of Culture, Government of India - was inaugurated on 11 November 1985
by former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi. With its dynamic exhibits and immersive
zones, the new gallery is poised to become one of the most engaging attractions for
students, educators, families, and science enthusiasts.The gallery was inaugurated by Prof. Jayaram N. Chengalur, Director, Tata Institute
of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Colaba, Mumbai. Also present on the occasion
were Shri Umesh Kumar, Director, Nehru Science Centre, along with an enthusiastic
audience of over 300 school students and visitors.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Jayaram N. Chengalur highlighted the importance of
experiential learning in science. He noted that scientific concepts are best
understood when learners ask questions, explore how things work, and engage
directly with hands-on exhibits. He encouraged students to visit the Centre regularly
and make full use of its enriching environment, which transforms science into an
enjoyable journey of discovery.Shri Umesh Kumar, Director, Nehru Science Centre, shared insights into the newly
launched gallery and its exhibits. He reiterated the Centre’s guiding philosophy of
KISMIF—“Keep It Simple, Make It Fun”—aimed at sparking curiosity while
simplifying complex scientific principles for young minds.

Zone 1: The World of Physics features installations that uncover the secrets of
forces and motion—from the illusion of the Magic Water Tap and the spinning Gyro
Turn to the buoyancy twist of the Sinking Ship, the curving Magnus Effect, and the
magnetic marvel of the Eddy Current Egg.
Zone 2: The Digital Frontier immerses visitors in emerging technologies. Guests can
step into Supplemented Reality, sculpt landscapes with Topographical 3D Mapping,
let AI identify their tune in Humming to Playback, and discover their Birthday in Pi
hidden within a million digits.
Zone 3: Body & Mind Challenge blends physical activity with cognitive skills. Visitors
can test reflexes in How Fast You Are, climb the vertical Labyrinth Climber, measure
strength with Muscle Power, and explore the physics behind the perfect shot in the
Basketball Challenge.***
