**Summary:**
The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare has launched CROPIC (Collection of Real Time Observations and Photographs of Crops) as a technology initiative under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY). CROPIC is a digital application designed for collecting crop field photographs via smartphones to assess crop health and identify damage from various risks. The app facilitates the collection of geotagged, crowdsourced photographs from farmers and field coordinators. The primary purpose of these time-series, geotagged photographs is to validate insured crops against actual crops grown and to assess crop damage in the event of localized calamities. CROPIC supports PMFBY by providing general crop surveillance information, reporting crop risks in near real-time, and supporting yield estimation models (YESTECH) for validation and risk accounting. The initiative aims to empower crop insurance stakeholders with a transparent, real-time, and evidence-based system for monitoring and managing crops, thereby strengthening the effectiveness of crop insurance, disaster response, and ensuring data-driven policy decisions. This information was released by the Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shri Ramnath Thakur, in a written reply in Rajya Sabha on July 25, 2025.
