Executive Summary & Key Takeaways

This document summarizes the Indian government's response to questions raised in Lok Sabha regarding the Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana (AABY) in Maharashtra. The questions pertain to the scheme's implementation, beneficiary numbers among Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and tribal populations, particularly in Maharashtra's Aspirational Districts, challenges in reaching these communities, and government efforts to improve awareness and enrollment. The Minister of State for Labour and Employment clarified that AABY, launched in 2007 to provide life and disability cover to individuals aged 18-59 in identified vocations and living below or marginally above the poverty line, was converged with the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) effective June 1, 2017. Under PMJJBY, a death benefit of Rs. 2 lakh is provided for insured individuals aged 18-50 at an annual premium of Rs. 436. PMSBY offers Rs. 2 lakh for accidental death or total permanent disability and Rs. 1 lakh for partial permanent disability due to accidents for those aged 18-70, with a Rs. 20 annual premium. The individual bears the total premium of Rs. 456 (Rs. 436 + Rs. 20). As of July 2, 2025, cumulative registrations under PMJJBY and PMSBY are approximately 24.05 crore and 51.85 crore, respectively. In Maharashtra, the corresponding figures are about 1.72 crore and 3.85 crore, respectively. Since AABY has been integrated into PMJJBY and PMSBY since June 1, 2017, no further fund allocation is being made under the AABY scheme.
